The Allen-Stevenson School, founded in 1883, is a K-9 independent school for boys with an enrollment of 415 students. The School seeks a compelling and passionate musician with highly developed music skills to oversee our Instrumental Music program. This full-time position will begin in August 2019 and is eligible for a complete benefits package. This position reports to the Head of the Music Department and supervises some 12 part-time instrumental instructors.
Teaching music classes and directing orchestral ensembles
Supporting instrumental music instructors in managing their studios, including parent communication and student billing submissions to the Business Office
Overseeing instrumental instructor attendance and associated payroll submissions to the Business Office
Coordinating student requests for private music lessons and instrument rentals
Assisting in planning musical performances and supporting other performing arts occasions when necessary and appropriate
Embracing an initiative-driven faculty culture focused on advancing the School’s mission
The Ideal Candidate
Enjoys an expansive repertoire, which engages a variety of talent at all levels (ensembles and the community as a whole)
Understands current teaching pedagogies and child & adolescent development
Has knowledge of and experience in instrumental instruction at the elementary & middle school level
Models flexibility in both implementing best practices and pursuing success for each student
Demonstrates cultural competency through experience working with diverse populations
Is fluent with academic and music technology that advances student learning and demonstrates the willingness to integrate it into the classroom when appropriate
Collaborates with colleagues in various subject areas and participates in other aspects of school life
Wants to be part of the Allen-Stevenson teaching and learning community within and beyond the classroom
Shows patience and empathy with adolescents, especially boys
Is self-reflective, able to work independently, and committed to professional growth
Communicates effectively and shows a ready, willing sense of humor
Qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in music, and a graduate degree is preferred. Experience in teaching younger children and adolescents is expected. The School will consider hiring an interim.
