St. Hilda's & St. Hugh's is seeking candidates to fill the part-time position of Brass Bands Associate Director. The school is seeking qualified musicians who are ready to join a vibrant and evolving music program. Candidates must exhibit a passon for teaching middle school children and finding the best path towards tailoring instruction for each child's success.
Our school is alive with music. From room to room, the sounds echo through the halls - chapel hymns, accompanied by our Rieger pipe organ, hornis in our brass band, and performances by our choruses and instrumental ensemble. At each grade level, it is our goal to instill a love of music and to encourage children to joyfully make music. Our method of teaching is rooted in the Kodaly Method, an approach that places emphasis on the ability to:
Sing, or play, traditional fold songs from a variety of cultures and heritages
Listen to, analyze, and perform the great music of the world
Achieve mastery of musical reading and writing
Improvise and compose
Field trips, performances, special projects, and guest artists enhance the musical education program. The school also offers after-school music study in piano, violin, brass, guitar, and voice.
St. Hilda's & St. Hugh's Brass Band is modeled after the "British-style" brass bands that evolved in England during the 19th century. Ensemble rehearsals take place 3 times a week for 40 minutes each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. These performance-based classes are for the upper division students, grades 4-8. In fourth grade, students begin on cornets, baritones, euphoniums, and trombones. Brass Band students learn to read, understand, and perform from standard music notation. In the process, they learn about rhythms and proportions, dynamics, articulations, harmonies, and melodies. They learn to work in a group to produce a beautiful sound. As they progress through the program, the students learn to play increasingly complex music, and are offered additional opportunities to perform, such as smaller ensembles for Chapel services and the Pageant Band for the annual Christmas Pageant. Band students are divided into the following three ensembles: the Fourth Grade Band, the Fifth Grade Band, and the Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Grade Band.
Candidates should be ready to demonstrate and discuss their desire to work with middle school children. Candidates should also have proven ability and experience teaching brass band instrument pedagogy. We are also looking for instructors willing to incorporate Kodaly methodology in the teaching of instrumental music and be open to new methods and technologies. Candidates should be proficient in teaching and demonstrating low brass instruments. A successful candidate will be able to show and teach from a broad understanding of diverse musical styles.
The instructor will lead rehearsals in conjunction with the Director of Brass Bands. The instructor will accommodate schedules and deadlines as defined by the school calendar, including concerts, faculty meetings, departmental meetings, parent conferences, admissions events, and will write reports for each student several times per year in each ensemble. Music class webpages should also be regularly updated by the instructor. Additional rotas may be assigned, based on the experience of the hire.
This part-time position is available beginning September 2019.
