Gilman School, a leading Kindergarten through 12th grade independent day school for boys, is seeking a full-time (10 month), creative, organized, and collaborative Library Assistant for the Upper School Library. The responsibilities for this position include assisting in day to day library activities including, but not limited to, checkout, shelving, locating missing items, processing material, and maintaining heavily used physical space; handling circulation duties, including reports and overdue notices; supporting students reading and research needs; and creating displays.
The ideal candidate must have the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with students and adults; excellent oral and written communication skills; and strong organizational skills with attention to detail. The Upper School Library Assistant works closely with the Upper School Librarian in shaping the climate of the Upper School Library. S/he is responsible for maintaining a climate that facilitates learning and study, attending to student behavior and the physical space, reshelving and cataloguing resources, and other duties that arise.
Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree and experience working with high school aged students is preferable. A Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (or enrollment in a program) is preferable. S/he demonstrates patience, creativity, initiative and an understanding of library and information literacy curricula. Candidate must be able to complete physical tasks associated with maintaining books and equipment, carrying boxes of paper, carrying and shelving books, and pushing book carts. School library experience is preferable and experience with Follett’s Destiny is desired. Candidates must be able to work effectively cross culturally with students and faculty/staff.

Originally established in 1897 as “The Country Day School for Boys,” Gilman School is rooted in the belief that, in order to build character, school should provide every boy with strong academics and a full-day program that includes afternoon sports. Today, Gilman educates boys in kindergarten through Grade 12 through a rich, college-preparatory program of offerings in academics, athletics, and the arts. The school subscribes to the teacher-coach model and takes great pride in the fact that its teachers connect with the students through activities outside the classroom. Most Gilman teachers are involved in athletics and/or physical education. Teachers also help to cultivate students’ interests in music and performing arts through a variety of groups, bands, and productions.
Set on a 68-acre campus in the northern part of Baltimore City, the school serves roughly 1000 students in three divisions: Lower School (K-Grade 5), Middle School (Grades 6-8), and Upper School (Grades 9-12). Facilities include separate buildings for each of the three divisions, an Upper School science building, an auditorium, and a shared dining hall. Athletic facilities include an arena and other gymnasiums, indoor pool, weight room, locker rooms, game and practice fields, tennis courts, and alpine tower. Gilman has a full-time faculty of nearly 140, and the average class size is 16 students. A strong coordinate program with two neighboring girls schools—Roland Park Country School and The Bryn Mawr School—provides students in the Upper School with a broad and comprehensive curriculum and with opportunities for coeducational classes on all three campuses.
The Upper School
Gilman’s Upper School offers a rigorous college preparatory curriculum to approximately 450 boys. Students take five major courses each semester (English, mathematics, foreign language, lab science, history). They must also complete courses in art, music, and religion, participate in either interscholastic or intramural athletics, and complete 50 hours of community service during their Upper School careers. Advanced Placement (AP) courses are offered in numerous disciplines. The tri-school coordinate program vastly expands the course menu for Upper School students, who can take advantage of coeducational offerings in English, history, language, and science. Classes last 70 minutes and meet every other day of a ten-day academic cycle, with an additional shorter period occurring on one other day in the cycle. An advisory program creates a structure by which teachers can keep track of and support each boy’s progress. Upon graduation, Gilman students matriculate to a healthy variety of the nation’s most selective colleges and universities.
