CATHEDRAL SCHOOL JOB DESCRIPTION MUSIC TEACHER, GRADES 4-8
The Cathedral School of St. John the Divine, a K-8 institution located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, seeks a dynamic and committed Music teacher for grades 4-8. The ideal candidate should understand and enjoy working with young adolescents and be a skilled music and performance teacher. The Music Teacher reports directly to the Head of the Upper School.
Teaches two classes per six-day cycle to two different sections of 4th through 8th Grade
Music. These classes include instruction in musical form and composition, music
history, and performance.
Lead/ co-lead musical portions of Chapels, Evensongs, and other community
Support Upper School dramatic productions in 6th and 7th grade.
Produce and direct the 8th Grade Spring Musical in coordination with the other
members of the 8th grade team.
Stay current on trends in music education and pedagogy with an eye towards
differentiated learning and highlighting a wide range of cultures, voices, and experiences.
Collaborates with the other members of the Music department to coordinate a clear
scope and sequence from grade to grade in terms of both subject matter and skill
Seeks out and develops cross-curricular learning opportunities to connect music to other
Regularly communicates with the Chaplain in preparing students for the musical needs
of community celebrations, Chapels, and Evensongs.
Maintain current and detailed documentation for all students, including information
related to grading, behavior, attendance, etc.
Writes comments twice yearly for students in Grades 4-8.
Is proactive and consistent in parent communication.
Attends Wednesday afternoon meetings.
Periodically monitors lunch and recess, as well as bus or porch.
Willingness to lead an Upper School Elective.
Accompanies Upper School on overnight trip in the fall.
Is available for other school events and activities as needed.
