Position Purpose: The High School Math teacher is responsible for creating a classroom environment to develop competencies in mathematical skills and an understanding of the structure of mathematics; to motivate each student to apply mathematical understanding and skills in the solution of practical problems; and to guide students’ development of self-advocacy and executive functioning skills for successful transition to college and next steps in their lives.
The High School Math Teacher skill set must include proficiency with teaching Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Trigonometry, and Pre-calculus. He/she should be able to trace math difficulties to the fundamental components and work to remediate and fill gaps. The High School Math Teacher is responsible, in collaboration with the teaching team, for creating a vibrant, student-centered environment that supports the learning and personal growth of each student. He or she must be skillful in establishing strong relationships with students and creating learning opportunities that motivate and inspire students to develop all aspects of their learning profiles.
1. Understands the cognitive/brain-based underpinnings of mathematical thinking and difficulty in mathematics
2. Thinks flexibly and embraces progressive pedagogy, with a keen eye towards developing “21st Century Skills” in students
3. Committed to differentiation in designing and adapting instruction to meet a range of student learning needs and interests
4. Demonstrates enthusiasm about interdisciplinary instruction; looks to create interdisciplinary learning experiences for students
5. Encourages students' creative expression, incorporates student interest and passions, and develops critical thinking
6. Seeks opportunities for collaboration and is excited about generating curriculum and assessment ideas in a team setting
7. Exhibits curiosity, creativity, and self-reflection, with a willingness to take initiative and run with new ideas
1.Bachelor’s degree required
2.Advanced degree and 3-5 years of classroom experience preferred
3.Experience with differentiation, or with students with learning differences with an ability and willingness to adjust to student understanding and misunderstanding
4.Background and interest in teaching electives,coaching and/or advising clubs is a plus
5.Excellent verbal and written communications skills
