The Kew-Forest School, a Preschool through 12th grade, co-educational day school in Forest Hills, New York, seeks an experienced and dynamic Director of Development. The ideal candidate will be entrepreneurial, excellent with people, a strong relationship builder who is perceptive and high in EQ, and a highly organized and effective manager of volunteers who understands and switches readily between the needs of a variety of constituencies.
The Director of Development reports directly to the Head of School, works closely with the Board of Trustees, and serves on the School’s eleven-member senior leadership team. The Director of Development oversees all aspects of the stewardship and fundraising program, including the annual fund, capital campaigns, special events, planned giving, and alumni relations to support the School’s strategic vision, cultivating a culture of philanthropy and gratitude across all constituencies.
Oversee and manage all aspects of the development office with focus on fundraising, event planning, alumni relations, etc. This includes oversight of gift processing and information systems, ensuring that internal systems and state-of-the-art technology are in place to support development efforts.
Formulate a comprehensive development program in consultation with the Head of School and the Board of Trustees.
Be an invested member of the School community who appreciates education, educators, and the impact of Kew-Forest on the lives of generations of students and work closely and collaboratively with the senior leadership team in order to advance the mission and priorities of the School.
Cultivate and solicit leadership and major gift prospects personally and work closely with the Head of School, various trustees and volunteers, supporting them in their fundraising responsibilities and accompanying them on donor visits when appropriate.
Act as the staff liaison to the Development Committee of the Board of Trustees, including the organization of fundraising and stewardship training for the Board.
Oversee the Alumni Council in their efforts to foster lifelong connections among alumni and to the School and collaborate with the Parent Association in their efforts to inspire current families to stay connected and volunteer for community events.
Collaborate on marketing and communication initiatives to expand and enhance the school’s visibility and reputation, including collaborative work on the School’s publications.

The Kew-Forest School was founded in its current location in 1918 by Louis D. Marriott and Guy Hinman Catlin. Their objective was to establish “a country day school which has modern equipment, high standards of scholarship and discipline, and a sincere spirit of service.” Kew-Forest opened its doors to neighborhood residents and currently has students from Forest Hills and 40 other communities in Queens, as well as areas of Brooklyn, Long Island, Bronx and Manhattan. Today, the Kew-Forest student body is one of the most diverse and international to be found at any independent school in the country. The current school building, anchored by the original brick building of Georgian architecture, includes lower and upper school wings, a gymnasium/auditorium, a library wing, and a laboratory building on two acres of land. At least four years of relevant experience in a development-related role, in an educational environment preferred
Direct experience and proven success in directly soliciting and closing large gifts, individually and as part of a team
Leadership experience with managing and motivating staff members and volunteers
Willingness to be part of a collaborative environment and work closely with colleagues, board members, alumni/alumnae, and parents
Strategic thinker with a “can-do” style
Positive attitude, flexible approach, and a sense of humor
Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to work with the School’s diverse constituent groups with a professional and empathetic approach while maintaining strict confidentiality
Commitment to cultural competence, social justice, equity, and inclusion work at the School
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively; verbally, in writing, and on social media
Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
Strong knowledge of fundraising data software and database management software
Experience with grant writing preferred
