The Pingry School seeks a talented and dynamic Middle and Upper SchoolPermanent Substitute Teacher to join a diverse academic community. The ideal candidate for this unique opportunity is a recent college graduate who is an aspiring teacher with a palpable interest in independent school education. Having little or no teaching experience, this aspiring educator would enjoy mentorship by expert faculty, access to robust professional development and best practices in classroom instruction, and exposure to a zestful school life.
A person with consistently high standards, the Permanent Substitute Teacher will receive hands-on experience through in-house class coverage in the Middle School and Upper School. Fully involved in the life of the School, the selected candidate will embrace the Permanent Substitute Teacher role as an apprentice, accordingly attending School meetings and functions, advising students, coaching teams, directing clubs, and supervising activities.
Fields open to the Permanent Substitute Teacher vary from year to year and may include visual arts, drama, music, health, fitness, Latin, French, German, Mandarin, Spanish, English, history, mathematics, computer science, biology, chemistry, and physics. While this position is for two years, reappointment is possible where there has been a high level of performance in and out of the classroom.
Required qualifications include: a bachelor’s degree, knowledge of disciplinary content and its organization, facility with tools, structures, and modes of disciplinary inquiry, interest in pedagogy and pedagogical content knowledge, proficiency with technology, dedication to working cooperatively, and commitment to coaching sports, advising students, and supervising clubs. In addition to honor and character, commitment to intellectual engagement, and appreciation for stewardship and sustainability, especially important is the candidate’s ease with diverse constituencies and demonstrated commitment to an inclusive school community.
