The Director of Residential Life is a creative team leader that collaborates with all members of the Saint John’s Prep community to guide resident students to new levels of excellence in physical, moral, academic, and spiritual development while building community among all those connected to Saint John’s Prep.
Summary of Role
The Director is responsible for collaborating with students, parents, faculty, support staff, and administration toward the fulfillment of the mission, philosophy, and strategic plan of Saint John’s Preparatory School. The Director envisions, implements, and evaluates residential life programs and policies to ensure the safe and healthy moral and social maturation of young men and women while supporting all students in their efforts to become spiritually mindful and culturally informed adults. This position reports directly to the Head of School and resides in Saint Michael Hall.
Ensure the health and safety of all resident students while they are in the school’s care.
Develop a comprehensive residential life program that integrates all students of the Prep community through activities outside of the academic day, grounded in the Benedictine Practices.
Recruit, hire, train, supervise, support, and direct all Residential Life Staff.
Establish and maintain healthy and respectful relationships with students and parents.
Collaborate with the Principal and other staff to address student conduct with an educational and developmental approach, grounded in the Benedictine Practices.
Collaborate with key constituents within the Saint John’s community including, but not limited to the Principal, Admission, Counseling, Faculty, and Coaches
Manage the Residential Life program within the parameters of the budget.
Maintain a high level of professional competence and expertise by participating in continuing education and job-related personal and professional growth experiences
Serve as a steward of Saint Michael Hall physical plant resources, equipment, and grounds while maintaining a welcoming and well-kept resident hall environment.
Serve as a regular participating member of the Head of School’s administrative staff, Student Services Team, and serve as an ex-officio member of the Education and Student Life Committee of the Board of Regents as assigned by the Head of School.
Create and vet the approach to revenue generating residential program offerings during the summer months.
Possess ability to respond to urgent/crisis situations in a professional and calm manner, ensuring campus emergency protocols and school policy are followed.
Support, promote, and respect the school’s vision, mission and philosophy
Exemplify the Benedictine Practices in both one’s personal and professional life
Enjoy living and interacting with young adults, and work effectively with students living and learning in a multicultural environment
Sensitive to the various needs of students from diverse backgrounds
Possess a willingness to maintain a high level of competence. Discreet judgement and confidentiality are expected at this level of responsibility.
1-3 years residential life or related experience in secondary or higher education
Pass state/federal background checks
Possess or be able to obtain a valid Minnesota Driver’s License
Must be able to live on-campus
Experience in Secondary Residential Program
3-5 years residential life or related experience in secondary or higher education
Ability to climb stairs
