Worcester Preparatory School seeks an experienced full-time science teacher to instruct courses in 8th Grade Life Science and 9th Grade Physical Science. This position reports to the Middle School Head and typically teaches five sections per day in a seven period schedule and may be assigned study halls, clubs, or other supervisory roles. Section sizes generally range from 14 – 18 students.
8th grade Life Science is a hands-on, fast-paced course that introduces students to the study of life. Students will learn concepts including, but not limited to, the cell, photosynthesis, genetics, and the human body. They will dissect 7 specimens to delve deeper into the phyla of the animal kingdom. 9th-grade Physical Science introduces two big science concepts: chemistry and physics. With chemistry, students will learn the workings of the periodic table, the atom, and chemical reactions. In physics, they will study thermodynamics, Newton's laws, forces, and energy. In addition, each faculty member in the Middle School serves as advisor to seven to nine students. The position could also include roles as a class sponsor and/or directing after school programs for middle school students depending on candidate interest.
Candidates for this position should possess a BA/BS degree in the liberal arts (preferred) with the demonstrated ability to teach science at the above referenced level. Previous experience teaching science to middle or upper school students is desirable. State certification is not required. Candidates with the experience and interest to coach varsity/JV or middle school sports are desirable.
