Established in 1920, Bentley School is a K-12 co-educational, independent day school located on two campuses in Oakland and Lafayette. Bentley is an inclusive community that shares a vision of transformative learning and respect for the individual. Bentley seeks an art teacher at the Hiller campus in Oakland.
Responsibilities for this position will include, but are not limited to:
Teaching music to students in kindergarten through second grade including vocal instruction, training with classroom instruments, and general musicianship, including theory, composition and music history.
Teaching Middle School music electives
Creating a positive learning environment where students thrive
Utilizing repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary
Planning, implementing, and assessing grade-level curriculum
Preparing students for winter and spring concerts
Participating in all aspects of Bentley’s character education curriculum
Assisting in the planning, execution and accompanying of Friday K-5 assemblies
Provide musical accompaniment where needed for Theater Arts Programs
Collaborating regularly with the grade-level teachers and other specialists
Attending regular Lower School faculty and grade-level meetings, as well as art department meetings weekly
Communicating effectively with parents through class webpages, and report card comment writing
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in music and a minimum of two years of teaching experience in this field
Ability to sing and play piano and additional various musical instruments
Knowledge of a variety of music styles, repertoire, and teaching methodologies
Experience in Orff-Shulwerk methodology or Kodaly preferred
Ability and willingness to work with students in large group settings using multiple teaching methods to reach a broad range of students
Desire to continually examine one’s practice with the goal to improve student learning
