Anacapa English Teacher, Grades 7 - 12
Anacapa School is seeking a versatile Middle and High School English Teacher who has an interest in teaching a variety of grade levels and literature. Our curriculum features Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance, Modern, British, American, and World Literature with an emphasis on the Great Books list. We believe that students learn best when the teacher is passionate about the literature, themes, and units, and therefore this position allows for flexibility regarding book selection. The English teacher will collaborate with the Dean of Curriculum to select the books and units for each year. Anacapa School attends theatrical productions in the Santa Barbara and L.A. area each year and these themes, plays, and operas are incorporated into the English curriculum. The English teacher will also plan, organize, and implement an appropriate instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop a life-long passion for literature and writing and reach their full academic potential.
While the position for next year is for teaching English, Anacapa teachers often wear many hats. We welcome someone who is solely interested in teaching English, as well as someone who would potentially love to teach a variety of subjects in years to come. For example, there will be future opportunities to teach Latin, Spanish, History, Science, Math, and the Visual and Performing Arts. If there is another subject that the candidate enjoys and is qualified to teach, he or she should include that in the cover letter. Clubs and electives are a major part of Anacapa’s mission of experiential learning and therefore we encourage our teachers to share their particular passions and talents with our students.
Through regular conversations with the administrators, Anacapa teachers learn and understand their job responsibilities. It has been a hallmark of teachers throughout the history of Anacapa that their work goes beyond the classroom and includes not only the academic preparation of the student, but also the emotional, social, physical, and psychological development of students. Anacapa emphasizes the importance of experiential learning and therefore there are many opportunities to engage students outside of the formal classroom setting. Additionally, teachers at Anacapa are enthusiastic and energetic and will find support for new ideas and programs. This enthusiasm is encouraged and applauded at Anacapa. Faculty members at Anacapa also support one another.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Plan, prepare and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences;
Develop schemes of work, units, and lesson plans;
Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities;
Prepare classroom for class activities;
Provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities;
Collaborate with the Dean of Curriculum/Director of Cultural Programs and other faculty members to coordinate and integrate the English curriculum into cross-curricular projects and annual cultural excursions;
Serve as an advisor to a group of students;
Teach three sections of English and lead two extracurricular clubs and/or electives within the 8:30-3:30 school day;
Middle and High School English Teacher Duties, grades 7-12
Identify and select different instructional resources and methods to meet students’ varying needs;
Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment;
Use relevant technology to support instruction;
Observe and evaluate students’ performance and development;
Assign and grade class work, homework, tests and assignments;
Provide appropriate feedback on work;
Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students;
Maintain accurate and complete records of students’ progress and development;
Prepare required reports on students and activities;
Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing appropriate rules and procedures;
Counsel students with academic problems and provide student support and encouragement;
Participate in co-curricular and extracurricular activities such as social events, cultural excursions, guest speaker presentations, clubs, electives, overnight trips, community service, and other school community activities;
Participate in department and school meetings, as well as parent meetings;
Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues, and parents regarding student progress and student needs;
Keep updated with developments in subject area, teaching resources, and methods and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities;
Other tasks as assigned;
All teachers are also responsible for a variety of duties and tasks throughout the day; the Head and Assistant Head of School will make these assignments and share them with faculty. These tasks and assignments change as needs of the community are determined.

Education and qualifications should include the following:
Bachelor’s degree, required.
Master’s degree or teaching certificate, preferred.
