Oakcrest School, an independent school for girls grades 6-12 in Vienna, VA, seeks an experienced, dynamic full-time Spanish Teacher to start working in August 2019. Applicants must have a strong Spanish background and should be able to teach across the Spanish curriculum, with priority given to teachers able to teach the AP Spanish Language and Culture course.
The Foreign Language program reflects the belief that through the study of other languages and cultures students learn how to meet the challenges of living in a globally conscious and globally connected society, with its diverse social settings and interactions. The purposeful study of another language requires students to look more carefully at their own, which spurs vocabulary growth and a better understanding of grammar and syntax in both the original and new languages. Multi-modal experience with a new language results in greater facility with it, so department faculty employ a variety of teaching, practice, and assessment formats and techniques, and create activities to promote student engagement with and mastery of the language.
Qualified applicants will meet the following criteria:
Master’s degree (preferred)
Native or near-native Spanish proficiency (required)
Minimum of 3 years teaching experience
Ability to teach a range of Spanish classes, from beginner to advanced levels.
Ability to work collaboratively within the Foreign Language Department and with other departments
Be well-versed in the Communicative Approach (and/or Task-Based Language Teaching), with sound ability to help students build the language naturally on solid grammatical grounds through conversation and communicative activities: interpretive, interpersonal and presentational modes
Use various instructional strategies that are academically rigorous and highly engaging
Contribute to school life in meaningful ways outside the classroom (coaching, leading extra-curriculars, supervisions, etc.)
Candidates who meet these criteria should send a cover letter, statement of teaching philosophy, résumé and a list of at least three current references to: email@example.com. Please include “Spanish Teacher” in the subject headline.
