The Stone Independent School is a progressive, interdisciplinary 9-12 independent school which believes that all students learn best by doing. It is our mission to graduate students who are prepared for college and prepared for a world beyond college, who practice empathy, ethicality, and gratitude, and who are committed to making the world a measurably better place -- and we hire accordingly.
Full-time faculty members teach a full academic load including multiple core classes and electives, teach at least one five-day “intensive” course, help lead morning community time, serve as club and House leaders, mentors, advisors, and -- eventually -- coaches. Our teachers are engaged in the work of designing curriculum and creating a school culture alongside our students. The ideal candidate will be inquisitive, interested in problem-based learning, engaged by Stone’s mission and creative ethos, highly energetic, and committed to working with adolescents. They will have at least three years of teaching experience in the Humanities, and the academic background to teach in interdisciplinary courses. They will be comfortable teaching a wide range of courses, they will be able to develop in their students the kinds of sophisticated writing and reading skills needed for success in college, and they will be excited about the prospect of joining a department of creative and dedicated teachers.
The faculty at Stone is comprised of innovative educators who like to ask "why"-- about pedagogy, about school culture, about education. Stone Faculty are experts in their field, they believe schools can be bigger and more creative endeavors, they are flexible and joyful, they are committed to social justice, and they laugh an awful lot. Stone faculty get to work early, stay late, collaborate across Lancaster, help paint classrooms, work in our community garden, serve lunches and attend (very small) school dances and run clubs and travel around the world.
