Chandler School is a private, independent, non-denominational day school in Pasadena, CA enrolling 450 students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The school was founded in 1950. The mission of Chandler School is to provide each student with the most academically challenging education in a nurturing, balanced and diverse environment. Chandler seeks a full-time director of communications. This position is a highly visible one within the community that requires a broad array of skills and a personable, confident demeanor. The director of communications designs and executes the entirety of Chandler’s internal and external communications program with the aim of supporting the school’s mission and strengthening its good standing in the Pasadena area. Equal parts content creation, strategic planning and constituent relations, this is an outstanding opportunity for a high energy, creative and enterprising professional. Major responsibilities include managing the school website, frequent targeted email blasts, print publications, photography, social media, media relations and more.
The director of communications is a member of Chandler’s administrative team and oversees a full-time graphic designer. This person will be an active participant in the school’s daily life and its advancement efforts in admission and fundraising.
Duties and Responsibilities
Update and maintain the school website, both the public facing side and the password-protected side. The director of communications, in collaboration with the director of technology, is the primary stakeholder in the operation of the school’s WhippleHill website, a critical component of the school’s operation.
Compile, layout and edit text and visuals for a wide array of email blasts, including a weekly newsletter to parents, a monthly newsletter from the Chandler Family Associates parent group, a High School Placement Bulletin, invitations to events and many more. Manage and update distribution groups to insure a high level of readership.
Manage the conception, writing, editing, design, printing and delivery of the semi-annual Shamrock as well as the annual report and other publications as needed, including an admissions viewbook.
Photograph, edit and make widely available photos from school events in addition to day-to-day school life to be used for the website, print publications, social media, advertisements and other applications.
Utilize appropriate social media channels to more thoroughly express Chandler’s mission and tell its story while building community and boosting engagement. Stay abreast of new platforms and trends in social media and evaluate their usefulness to Chandler.
Interface with local media outlets as appropriate to convey stories about Chandler. Coordinate event coverage with the Outlook newspaper. Manage print advertisements.
Liaise with the directors of Lower School, Middle School, human resources, finance, Afterschool, technology, athletics, admission and development to identify stories, marketing opportunities and opportunities to synchronize messaging across the entire school. Work with board members as needed to do the same.
Work closely with the Advancement and Admissions Office to conceptualize, execute and analyze comprehensive communications plans and projects that drive admissions, increase engagement with target audiences (parent, alumni, donors), and advance strategic priorities. Support the Advancement Office with campaign communications plan and anniversary projects.
Become an expert on all things Chandler. Thoroughly learn the scope and sequence of the curriculum, the nature of all activities and the personalities that make up the community, including alumni.
A minimum of a bachelor’s degree and three to five years of experience in marketing communications. Experience in an educational or cultural institution greatly preferred.
A willingness to support and embody the mission of Chandler School when interacting with co-workers, parents, students, trustees, alumni, neighbors and all constituents.
A warm, confident and patient demeanor. The ability to manage competing priorities. The ability to work autonomously and within the context of a team with equal comfort. The ability to think strategically and to communicate that vision.
The ability to craft and thoroughly edit copy from a number of sources while maintaining a consistent voice and brand standards. Familiarity with AP style preferred.
Experience with content management, learning management and student information systems. WhippleHill experience strongly preferred. Familiarity with Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge is a plus.
Experience in utilizing social media platforms to develop community and increase engagement.
Proven experience in content creation including photographs, videos, presentations and print publications.
Familiarity with best practices in fundraising and admission preferred.
An appetite for innovation and the ability to asses new trends in marketing communications and how they may be adopted to the benefit of Chandler School.
Experience interfacing with vendors and securing bids preferred.
Physical Demands and Working Environment
While performing the duties of this position, the employee will spend:
o 60% time sitting at a desk working at a computer.
o 30% time walking around campus and photographing activities. Involves a great deal of bending, kneeling and crouching.
o 10% time walking to and from meetings, traffic duty and other assignments.
Employee must be able to lift at least 20 pounds consistently. During large all-school events, employee may be required to spend long stretches standing up or staying mobile while taking photos.
While performing the duties of this position, the employee will work primarily in an office environment. Occasionally employee will be required to attend selected school events, outside of normal office hours, particularly events/programs where photography and post-publication will be needed.
