Lakeside School, an independent 5-12 coeducational day school located in North Seattle is currently recruiting for a Middle School Spanish Teacher for the 2019-2020 school year. This 1.0 FTE position will begin mid-to-late August and continue until November 27, 2019. There is the possibility that the position will continue through the first and/or second semester.
Responsibilities Language instruction at Lakeside Middle School is rigorous. Classes meet four times a week and the goal at every level is oral proficiency. The Spanish teacher will join Middle School faculty committed to providing the best educational experience possible for our 5th-8th grade students. Specific responsibilities include:
Teach four classes;
Deliver classroom instruction, with an emphasis on building oral proficiency, promoting students’ ability to read and write in the language, and exploring the culture and history of the Spanish-speaking world;
Provide academic support for students outside of the classroom as needed;
Collaborate and participate in the work of the Language department on innovative curriculum development, pedagogy, and assessment;
Write evaluations of students at each marking period;
Attend department and faculty meetings as scheduled;
Act as an advisor or co-advisor for 8-9 Middle School students; and
Participate in the life of the school community which includes grade-level outings, admissions events, faculty meetings, grade-level meetings, and general engagement with student life.

Requirements and Qualifications Successful candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in foreign language pedagogy or a related field and should possess native or near-native proficiency in both Spanish and English (must be able to interact with colleagues, students and families proficiently in English). Candidates must have experience teaching at a middle-school level or working with middle-school aged students in some other capacity. The ideal candidate has worked in an immersion setting using communicative and task-based pedagogical practices, has experience working collaboratively on a teaching team, and has experience living in a Spanish-speaking country. The candidate will demonstrate cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions. The candidate will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with cultures other than their own; and cultivate meaningful relationships with people that have different cultural frameworks. Successful completion of a criminal history background check is required.
