Responsibilities: As a member of the library and technology instructional team, the Middle/Upper School Librarian has duties and responsibilities as outlined below.
Plan, conduct, and evaluate scheduled library classes independently and in collaboration with classroom teachers
Develop a broad view of the entire school curriculum
Assess learning and information needs of Middle/Upper School students and staff
Instruct Middle/Upper School students and staff in the effective use of library resources and technology
Incorporate information literacy into day-today instruction
Advocate and promote reading and life-long learning
Adhere to and teach information on copyright and plagiarism to all students and staff
Support students in developing attitudes, habits, and skills leading to lifelong learning and good citizenship
Use current and innovative pedagogy and technology
Offer small group and individual instruction in information skills, research strategies, and use of digital resources.
Prepare bibliographies and resource lists to support class assignments and encourage reading
Assist teachers in integrating library services and instruction with classroom learning and collaboratively plans instructional units
Consult with teachers about students’ individual needs and problems
Inform teachers, students, and administrators about new materials
Assist teachers in finding materials for content-based instruction
Administrative and Professional
Create an inviting environment to promote the use of resources
Plan short- and long-term library program goals
Work cooperatively with constituencies of the school culture: parents, teachers, students, administrators, and community members
Develop, maintain, and provide access to a balanced collection of print and non-print resources for the use of students, teachers, and parents
Invite faculty input on activities and purchases
Participate in the planning and development of changes in the physical facility
Attend workshops, conferences, and courses to update professional skills on a continual basis
Participate in curriculum planning meetings
Participate in professional organizations
Maintain and update the Library’s web page and media presence
Select and order materials appropriate for the curriculum
Eliminate materials which are outdated, worn or no longer used
Keep accurate inventories of print, non-print, and technology materials and equipment

Qualifications: Must have excellent leadership, communication, and computer skills; and should be inquisitive, personable, flexible, energetic, and collegial. ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information sciences and appropriate state certification preferred.
