REPORTS TO: ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL OF ACADEMICS AND FACULTY DEVELOPMENT
St. Joseph’s Preparatory is a Catholic, Jesuit, independent four-year college preparatory school located on the northern edge of center city Philadelphia. Founded in 1851, this highly selective, all male school serves nearly 1,000 young men “to become men for and with others.” Students come from diverse economic, geographic, racial and ethnic backgrounds from throughout the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The Prep develops leaders of intellectual distinction, men of faith and integrity, men who are committed to social justice and community service, men open to growth, and men who are loving. At the Prep, classroom and chapel intersect with the religious formation of mind and heart.
The Coordinator, Prep Advantage Program is a member of our school community charged with the care of students who have been identified as candidates for this program. She/he supports students who are struggling academically in order that they progress in becoming self-regulated learners in their pursuit of the mission of St. Joseph’s Preparatory School.
The Coordinator engages each student individually, and interacts with academic administrators, teachers, counselors, coaches, moderators and parents to identify roadblocks and to develop strategies to address them, serving as facilitator, learning specialist, contact person, guide and mentor.
Monitors the academic progress, attendance and social/emotional well-being of academically at-risk students
Works act as a liaison between students in the program, their parents, teachers, academic administrators, counselors, moderators, and coaches to provide coordinated academic and social support
Meets with students in scheduled sessions to provide support with study skills, learning strategies and develops a plan with the student for academic improvement
Schedules time before and after school for structured study and/or tutoring
Identifies students during the course of the school year who should join the Advantage cohort
Attends grade level meetings
Understands, appreciates and implements the principles of Jesuit education as set forth in Jesuit secondary school literature and the documents of the Jesuit Schools Network (JSN)
Works with teachers to integrate empirically based instruction that is rooted in Jesuit pedagogy – with special attention given to the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm and the document “Go Forth and Teach”
Educates and trains teachers on the most effective methods to work with students who have special learning needs
Works with Catapult Learning counselors to assess students using several standardized measures of executive skills and learning and study strategies
Measures and tracks student achievement and program effectiveness via student grades, GPAs, standardized testing, etc.
Creates guidance class course syllabus as well as a course book or select a published textbook (including themes such as Executive Skills Functioning, Organizational Skills, etc.)
Communicate regularly with parents of Prep Advantage students.
Attend regular counseling department meetings.
Oversees program budget
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
Proven leadership abilities, commitment to academic excellence and cultural competence to bridge racial and socioeconomic divides.
Exceptional interpersonal skills and proven ability to network across diverse groups of stakeholders.
Have secondary teaching experience as well as successful educational leadership experience.
Master’s degree in a related field preferred.
Special Education Certification and/or experience with students with documented learning challenges.
Familiarity with academic coaching to strengthen students executive function skills
Familiarity with assessments related to academic underachievement and developing individualized educational plans
Familiarity with program management and evaluation.
Assessment, teaching, and counseling skills related to academic difficulties
Ability to delegate
Managing vision and purpose
Planning, managing, measuring progress, and evaluating (goal based & process based)
Understanding of resources helpful to Prep Advantage students.
Excellent communication skills
