This paternity leave position entails teaching two sections of fifth grade Core (English and history), serving as an advisor to a group of fifth grade students, collaborating closely with a grade-level partner, and working as a part of an interdisciplinary fifth grade team.
The fall semester history curriculum asks students to consider how and why civilizations developed. It begins with prehistory and geography and continues on to Egypt. The culminating project of the study is a research-based informational essay and a corresponding construction project. The goal of the fifth grade literature curriculum is to encourage children to think deeply about story and character, to discuss their ideas, and to write clearly about what they have read. In the fall, students read The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis. The creative writing curriculum emphasizes personal memoir and short fiction. Revision is a major part of both expository and creative writing. Other areas of emphasis in the Core program are: oral presentation skills, study and organization skills, test-taking skills, and use of the laptop to enhance learning. Our project-based approach provides myriad opportunities for differentiation and self-assessment.
Teachers at Packer are asked to be available to provide their students with sustained, individualized attention outside of the classroom and to maintain frequent written and oral communication with students’ families. This position requires comfort with the use of technology in the classroom, facility with email and learning management systems, and experience with a broad range of instructional practices. Candidates must have at least one year of middle school teaching experience, strong writing skills, and a demonstrated commitment to their teaching practice.
Packer’s commitment to diversity requires of all faculty members a willingness to engage with complex ideas, to reflect critically on one’s own experiences, and to thoughtfully engage in identity, equity and inclusion work. We actively encourage applicants with broad and diverse backgrounds to apply.
