Description of Position:
The Director of Grades 3-5 is responsible for the overall, direct, day-to-day supervision of these three grade levels. The Director provides leadership and administration that inspires instruction and support personnel to strive for superior performance in order to provide the best opportunities for high standards of academic, character and social-emotional growth of the school’s students. The Director oversees grades 3-5 faculty and staff and the school’s library faculty and works collaboratively with the Director of Lower Elementary and the Director of 6th Grade. The Director of Grades 3-5 reports directly to the Head of School.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides leadership and administration for the operation and functioning of the division consistent with the philosophy, mission, values and goals of the school. This includes the instructional, character, social-emotional and non-cognitive programs; student discipline; and the evaluation of direct reports.
Provides leadership in the hiring process for all direct-report positions and recommends finalists to the Head of School.
Provides leadership in the professional growth of all direct reports, collaborating with the Director of Lower Elementary, Director of 6th Grade, School Psychologist and Head of School to plan professional development opportunities and faculty workshop days.
Provides leadership and administration for the curriculum and instructional program for Grades 3-5. Provides coaching and support for the faculty and staff in the areas of curriculum and pedagogy. Maintains current knowledge regarding resources, research and best practices in curriculum and instruction. Coordinates with the Director of Lower Elementary and the Director of 6th Grade to develop an articulated DK-6th grade curriculum and instruction scope and sequence.
Provides leadership in the work and dialogue around diversity, equity, and inclusivity.
Coordinates with the Director of Lower Elementary to develop a schedule to balance the developmental needs of students with teacher planning time.
Establishes and promotes high academic standards and expectations for all students, faculty and staff.
Facilitates the organization of effective classroom environments that reflect the school’s educational philosophy.
Serves as a member of the Leadership Team.
Serves on and/or chairs committees as needed.
Performs other duties and oversees special assignments as necessary or as assigned by the Head of School.
Skills and Knowledge:
Highly skilled in the following areas: communication, interpersonal and relationship building, analytical and strategic thinking, organization, time management, delegation, problem-solving, conflict management and decision-making.
Strong background in curriculum development, childhood development and employee management and supervision.
Adept at public speaking.
A role model of high standards of professional behavior and strong leadership.

Education and Experience:
Master’s degree required. Degrees in education or organizational leadership preferred.
Minimum of three years of experience in an administrative role preferred.
Minimum of 8-10 years of experience as a teacher/educator
