Starting in July 2020, St. Andrew’s School located in Barrington, Rhode Island seeks a dynamic and visionary leader to oversee the school’s newly re-imagined academic program. Guided by our founder’s deep commitment to serving those without access - known as the Chapin Tradition - the Assistant Head of School for Academics will oversee all curricula and instructional practices, ensuring that both are rooted and consistent with St. Andrew’s mission, values, and strategic priorities. Reporting directly to the Head of School, the Assistant Head of School for Academics will shepherd the school through the implementation of an open access International Baccalaureate program in grades 6-PG.
With a blend of enthusiasm, care, and efficacy, the Assistant Head of School for Academics will provide leadership and guidance in curricular content, infrastructure and change, pedagogy, and faculty growth and professional development. In partnership with the Director of Learning Services, the Assistant Head of School for Academics will ensure that all faculty are trained in brain-based pedagogy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Facilitates the implementation and ongoing evaluation and refinement of the academic program across all grades and disciplines to ensure overall quality, relevance, and vertical and horizontal alignment of content and skills
Sustains supportive and trustworthy relationships with faculty and, in partnership with the Division Heads, provides consistent faculty mentoring, support and review to ensure excellence in teaching, a student-centered approach, and maximum engagement in learning
Is a visible, engaged presence in the daily life of the school, including visiting classrooms, attending evening and after-school events, and teaching one course
Promotes a culture of growth by structuring and leading an effective, intentional system of professional development, including establishing school-wide, departmental, and individual goals and programming based on faculty interest and needs, program priorities, strategic plans, and accreditation findings
Oversees the faculty hiring process in collaboration with Division Heads and Head of School, and leads onboarding and orientation for new teachers
Ensures the effective day-to-day operation of the Master Program
Ensures a strong a College Advising program
Serves as a spokesperson for St. Andrew’s academic program with internal and external constituencies, including maintaining open and consistent communication with faculty and staff, presenting to current and prospective parents, speaking at admissions events, and participating in regional, state, national and international associations and conferences
Manages, interprets, and responds to student assessment data including standardized tests
Ensures the library is a hub of academic exploration and technological innovation
Oversees the implementation of a new Master Schedule for the 2020 academic year
Partners with the Director of Student Life on the roll-out of a revised Advising Program
Partners with the Dean of Student on Discipline related matters
Designs and Chairs an Academic Support Team to meet the academic needs of at-risk students
Chairs the Academic Leadership Team responsible for overall academic program efficacy
Demonstrated track record of collaboration, curriculum assessment and design across grades, teacher evaluation, and working with a wide range of learners
Outstanding interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
Excellent organizational and time management skills
Strategic thinker and empathetic problem solver
Strong work ethic and high level of integrity
Master’s degree in Educational Leadership preferred
