We are currently seeking a Lower/Middle School Librarian
Position: Lower/Middle School Librarian Reports to: Head of Lower School FLSA Status: Exempt
Job Summary The Lower/Middle School Librarian serves students and faculty in grades Pre-kindergarten through 6th grade. The Librarian is responsible for providing a developmentally appropriate educational program and library collection that is in accordance with the Goals and Criteria of a Sacred Heart education and the philosophy that implements it. The Librarian has the following responsibilities:
Plan and conduct weekly inquiry-based library classes for all grades Pre-kindergarten through 4th, which foster independence in learning by teaching skills in finding, using and presenting information
Plan and conduct research instruction in collaboration with 5th and 6th grade teachers
Collaborate with administration and faculty to integrate the use of literature, research skills and technologies throughout the Lower and Middle School curriculum
Foster an interest in books and a love of literature through reading, storytelling, booktalks, book clubs, author visits, summer reading lists, and other activities for grades Pre-K through 6th
Respond to individual reference and reading guidance questions posed by faculty, students, and parents
ADMINISTRATION & COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT
Develop and maintain a collection of resources for grades PK to 6 on all topics, meeting the needs of different levels of maturity and learning styles at each grade level
Recommend and implement annual expenditures for Lower School collection development. Share responsibility for Middle School collection development
Maintain financial records for the Lower School library program
Ensure the relevancy of print, AV, and electronic collections by means of a systematic review of library materials
Manage and care for the Library facility, equipment, and furnishings in collaboration with the Library Director
Plan and participate in special events for Lower School students, faculty, and parents which promote the library and literature, including the annual Book Fair
Catalog and process new materials with the help of the Lower School Library Assistant
Manage the Birthday Book Program
Supervise the Lower School Library Assistant
Contribute to and collaborate in the development of a Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 scope and sequence of library instruction
Provide information for the school community, including new materials and techniques that can be used to strengthen instruction, focusing on the Lower/Middle School community
Plan and participate in Lower School staff development programs involving library materials and research technologies
Attend Lower School faculty meetings, and faculty in-service days
Represent the Library at Lower School faculty and parent events
Keep abreast of professional literature and attend relevant professional meetings
Master’s degree in Library Science preferred
A minimum of 2 years as a librarian in charge of a lower school library curriculum is preferred
An interest and relevant experience in teaching and working with children ages 3 to 12, with a focus on Pre-Kindergarten through 4th grade
A passion for children’s and middle grade literature
Facility with and knowledge of technology, including online databases, Follett catalog, Google Apps, Chromebooks and printers
