Dean of Students, Division Head/Principal, Head of School
Pomfret School is seeking an Assistant Head of School, starting in July 2020. The Assistant Head reports directly to the Head of School and is responsible for the daily oversight and management of student life at Pomfret. This person has direct oversight of and responsibility for managing the following administrative areas of the school:
Dean of Students Office (Boarding and Day)
Afternoon Activities Program, including athletics
Health Services and Student Health Education
Community Service Programs
Director of Spiritual and Ethical Education
Parent Executive Counsel / Committee
The specific responsibilities are wide ranging and subject to alteration, but they cover the following broad areas:
Management of program and personnel in the administrative areas listed above; initial decision making and follow up when issues arise
Program development, implementation and evaluation
Evaluation and professional development of residential faculty and afternoon activities supervisors
Budget oversight and financial planning
Strategic, long-range and master planning related to student life (both facilities and program)
Other duties as assigned by the Head of School, including participation in fundraising efforts as relevant to student life
The Assistant Head of School is expected to chair meetings with the above administrators to support the effectiveness of their efforts and to communicate about issues of student life.
The Assistant Head of School will have the responsibility for overseeing the following initiatives and programs, as well as new programs:
With various individuals, continue the development of the QUEST (Question, Understand, Engage, Share, Transition) Program
In coordination with other administrators, ensure the development of appropriate professional development programs and assessment/ evaluation processes for residential faculty, advisors, and coaches
With the Director of Facilities, manage the implementation of the school’s Emergency Management Plan
Participate in planning for facility renovations involving student life and faculty housing
Continue the examination of gender issues/opportunities within the community
Assist in the implementation and implementation of a system of administrative evaluations
The Assistant Head of School is a member of the senior administrative team and will attend all Board of Trustees meetings. This is a year-round position, with four weeks off in the summer and the normal school vacations in November, December and March. As is true of all administrative positions, the Assistant Head of School is expected to be available to members of the community throughout the normal administrative workday unless otherwise engaged in school business (coaching, teaching, meetings, school travel, etc.). Teaching, coaching, and residential expectations will be defined on an annual basis, but involvement in those areas is strongly encouraged.
Bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) in an applicable field
Commitment to supporting and enhancing a school culture rooted in community, growth, and integrity
Ability to communicate with students, parents, colleagues, and alumni, based on a highly developed sense of emotional intelligence, and a healthy respect for differing points of view
Excellent public speaking, facilitation, and listening skills
Ability to work collaboratively with multiple teams to accomplish shared goals
Detail-oriented with the ability to manage time-sensitive projects
High ethical standards and an acute awareness of appropriate boundaries
Sensitivity and respect for the needs of an adolescent population and a boarding school faculty
