Lakeside School, an independent coeducational day school located in north Seattle, Washington, is currently recruiting for a middle school long term substitute Latin teacher (.75 FTE) for spring semester starting January 20, 2020. Language instruction at Lakeside Middle School is rigorous. Students take language every year (French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese or Latin). Classes meet 3-4 times a week and the goal at every level is literary proficiency. The Latin teacher will join Middle School faculty committed to providing the best educational experience possible for our 5th-8th grade students. Specific responsibilities include:
Deliver classroom instruction, with an emphasis on building literary proficiency and exploring the culture and history of the Roman world;
Provide academic support for students outside of classroom as needed;
Collaborate and participate in the work of the Language department on innovative curriculum development, pedagogy, and assessment;
Write evaluations of students at midterm and end-of-term;
Attend department and faculty meetings as scheduled;
Act as a co-advisor for 8-9 Middle School students; and
Participate in the life of the school community which may include grade-level outings, admissions events, faculty meetings, grade-level meetings, and general engagement with student life.
Requirements and Qualifications
Successful candidates will hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Latin or Classics. Candidates must have experience teaching at a middle-school level or working with middle-school aged students in some other capacity. The ideal candidate has worked with a reading-based Latin text, has experience working collaboratively on a teaching team, and has an extensive knowledge of Roman culture and history. The candidate will demonstrate cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions. The candidate will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with cultures other than their own; and cultivate meaningful relationships with people that have different cultural frameworks. Candidates must satisfactorily complete two criminal background checks.
