Holland Hall seeks a passionate, committed educator who is energized by work with students to serve as a full-time seventh grade English teacher. This individual's core responsibility is for five sections of English. In addition, the teacher will serve as an advisor to a small group of students while keeping track of each advisee’s progress through ongoing communication with families. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
• Teach a wide range of writing assignments, including essays, poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction in order to expand students’ writing skills and provide them with greater insight into a wide variety of genres they will encounter. • Teach research and documentation as well as preparing presentations and leading class discussions. • Teach and supporting multiple drafts of writing assignments and providing written comments necessary to help student make each draft better than the one before. • Support the development of students' active reading skills including emerging annotation strategies. • Create, providing feedback on, and grading assessments. • Be familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. • Plan and participating in experiential learning opportunities that are part of the middle school experience • Honor the tenets of an experiential-based, college preparatory learning environment. • Demonstrate a willingness to implement brain-based teaching methods in the English classroom, utilize technology (iPad) to enhance learning and the ability to connect with this age group. • Embrace the opportunities and responsibilities of interdisciplinary planning, specifically integrating curriculum with grade level and departmental colleagues.
Candidates should consider developing positive relationships with students and creating curriculum to be among their core strengths. Experience and comfort with engaging students with age- appropriate digital content is valued. The candidate should have a history of evaluating student progress and offering individualized instruction to meet student needs. Candidates should be committed to collaborative learning and interdisciplinary planning. Familiarity with or a willingness to learn and adhere to the principles of the backward unit design model of Understanding by Design is expected. The seventh grade faculty position is responsible for 75 students, on average.
Interested candidates will enjoy working with a professional and collaborative middle school faculty that strives to provide each child with an opportunity to explore and grow his or her whole self. Candidates must have a strong background in the subject being taught, be willing to work in a team environment, have a deep respect for adolescents, and be positive and student-centered.
Interested candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in English or related experience and education. Previous Middle School teaching experience is also desired. A Master’s degree, independent school experience, and personal writing experience are preferred but not required. Special consideration will be given to exemplary candidates who can also support a significant extracurricular activity or coach a sport. Holland Hall’s middle school is a One-to-One learning environment with every student having access to an iPad. Comfort with technology and its application to accelerate student learning is essential.
