The Town School, a Nursery-8th grade coeducational school in New York City, seeks a new Chief Operating Officer. Reporting to the Head of School and working collaboratively with the Board of Trustees and Administrative Team, the COO is a member of the leadership team, and is responsible for the overseeing the administration of all financial operations, as well as oversight of facility operations, capital improvements, campus safety, student health, auxiliary programs, risk management, sustainability and food-service operations.
With Facilities Director, oversee the Facilities Department in its stewardship of the school building
Oversee all maintenance, capital projects, and relationships with consultants, architects, contractors, attorneys and/or city and state officials; oversee compliance with building codes and safety regulations, and maintain appropriate levels of insurance
Work closely with the Board, Head of School, architects and project managers during the planning and construction phases for all building projects
With Director of Finance and Human Resources, oversee the administration of all financial operations, liaise with Board of Trustees Audit, Finance, and Retirement Committees, create and monitor the school’s operating and capital budgets
Collaborate with Director of Finance and Human Resources and Head of School to ensure that operations remain on budget and are scaled to financial means
With Director of Security, Transportation and Neighborhood Relations, maximize campus safety by undertaking risk assessment and crisis planning; develop and review safety plan and protocols
With Director of Technology and IT Operations Manager, strategically plan and implement technology infrastructure and capital budgets, device purchasing and inventory, use protocols, and cyber security
With Head Chef/Manager and food services liaison, ensure the effective financial and operational management, code compliance of in-house dining services
Represent Town on the Board of the Promenade condominium, and negotiate joint building projects
With the School Nurse, ensure optimal and regulatory compliant student health services including treatment, preventive care, accident reporting, parent communications, and community safety
With the Coordinator of Auxiliary Programs, maximize programmatic and fiscal goals for after school and summer programming
Serve as the school’s liaison to the Board of Trustees Building Committee
Secure the highest level of quality products and services for the school, with a focus on efficiency, cost containment and sustainability
Establish and update policies and procedures for non-programmatic activities
With the Dean of Sustainability, forward the school’s mission of achieving a more neutral carbon footprint
In consultation with the school’s attorneys, maintain a working knowledge of government regulations, policies, and related issues of importance to Town
With appropriate department head, negotiate and monitor third party contractual obligations
Ensure the school’s effective operational and financial procedures by consistently examining current processes that ensure operational excellence
Perform miscellaneous projects as assigned by the Head of School
Ensure school-wide compliance with document retention policies established by NYSAIS

Qualifications Top of Form
Bachelor’s degree in related field
Minimum of ten years’ experience working within an independent school or equivalent business office
Significant responsibility responsibly managing day-to-day business operations
Ability to strategize and to manage expenses and capital projects
Successful leadership and supervisory experience
