Lakeside School, an independent 5-12 coeducational day school located in North Seattle is currently recruiting for an Upper School Chemistry Teacher (1.0 FTE)beginning in August 2020. The primary purpose of this position is to teach upper school chemistry to students in grades 9 through 12 and to actively contribute to the upper school science department. The department consists of 11 members who have deep expertise in their disciplines, are dedicated to collaborative, innovative teaching, and are inspired by working with a diverse population of high school students. As of 2019 the team is actively implementing new curricula that focuses on student curiosity and exploration, selfdirected learning, alternative forms of assessment, and 21st Century skills. The Science faculty work together closely both within discipline-specific teams (biology, physics, chemistry), as well as with each other in the department as a whole.
Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Functions) The Upper School chemistry teacher will teach 4 classes, which may include general chemistry and honors (AP-level) chemistry during the 2020-2021 school year. Essential duties include:
Classroom instruction; maximum class sizes are set at 18 students, with average class sizes of about 17 students;
Academic support for students outside of class time;
Academic advising for a group of about 10 students;
Collaboration in the work of the department on curriculum development, pedagogy, and assessment;
Participation in departmental, divisional, and all-school meetings; and
Active participation in the school community.
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
Passion for teaching science and helping students explore the physical sciences and contextualizing scientific theories through hands-on learning activities that have real world applications.
A willingness to collaborate with and engage in a dialogue about instructional practices with peers.
Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions. The candidates will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with cultures other than their own; and cultivate meaningful relationships with people that have different cultural frameworks.
A desire to be involved in a wide range of school activities in and outside the classroom.
Enthusiasm for working effectively with a driven and talented population of adolescents.
Ability to work harmoniously and collaboratively with adult colleagues.
Candidates must satisfactorily complete two criminal background checks.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a closely related field, with an advanced degree strongly preferred.
Experience teaching chemistry in a high school or college setting.
Experience with standard laboratory and safety techniques is required.
