The Director of Equity and Community Initiatives is a full-time position reporting to the Director of K-12 Academics in the Head’s Office. This individual works closely with the senior administrative team to build community and support diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the school community. The director must have a capacity for teamwork and for developing sensitive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and parents; have the ability to manage thoughtfully the personal, political, and institutional dynamics related to diversity issues in schools; be a self-starter with strong communication skills; and have a deep concern and compassion for people. This role will coordinate closely with the Director of Student Diversity Recruitment and Retention.
Based upon the school’s mission and long-range plan, provide strategic leadership in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the school community and as part of the overall strategic initiatives of the school
Act as a member of the diversity, equity, and inclusion executive committee
Ensure that activities, communications, and programs reflect Potomac’s character as a diverse and inclusive community
Lead diversity, equity, and inclusion outreach programs
Act as a liaison between the school and the various communities in the greater DC region in support of Potomac’s continued efforts with diversity recruitment programs
Coordinate the teamwork for developing sensitive working relationships with students, faculty and staff, and parents and for managing the personal, political, and institutional dynamics related to diversity issues in the school
Support faculty and staff recruitment efforts, including partnering on Potomac’s Diversity Hiring Fair
Act as a resource on diversity issues for faculty and staff in their work with students and in the development of curriculum and programs
Design and oversee professional development opportunities in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion
Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops
Coordinate and facilitate all aspects of student involvement in regional and national conferences related to diversity, equity, and social justice
Design and oversee special programs to meet the needs of students and their families in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion
Partner with program coordinators to provide ongoing support and programming for students and families from traditionally marginalized communities
Support and develop student diversity leadership, including the identification, design, and integration of opportunities within current student leadership training programs
Be fully immersed in the school community and engage in school events
Assume administrative, teaching, and/or coaching duties as appropriate
Perform other duties as assigned
Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of five years’ experience in an administrative leadership role
Ability to think strategically and proven experience designing and implementing innovative, effective, and sustainable diversity and inclusion programs in school settings.
Ability to maintain sensitive information in the strictest of confidence, exercising absolute discretion and professionalism.
Significant training and experience promoting anti-bias/social justice work with students, parents, and educators
Organized, detail-oriented, able to manage multiple projects simultaneously under varying deadlines
Ability to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within The Potomac School Community.
Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with faculty, support staff, parents and members of the community
Ability to identify and solve problems effectively and efficiently after considering a broad range of internal, external and regulatory factors.
Excellent communication skills required (both orally and in writing), maintaining open channels and exemplifying strong customer service skills
Training from nationally recognized diversity and inclusion workshop(s) or seminar(s) preferred
