The School counselor works with middle and high school students, parents, advisors, teachers and administrators to identify and address any social and emotional issues that arise in individuals or in the wider school community. The Counselor provides individual students ongoing support, short-term individual counseling, referrals to outside therapeutic providers, support groups and emergency psychiatric evaluations. The Counselor provides group support to classrooms to promote healthy communities of learners, helps train new faculty, presents workshops on topics of adolescent development to parents and faculty, and works closely with the Dean of Students, Dean of Middle School, Assistant Head of School for Program, and Learning Specialists to make sure that the emotional well-being of students is always front and center. The Counselor serves on the Head of School’s Administrative Team, the High School Administrative team and the Admissions Committee. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Works individually with HS and MS students regarding any psychosocial issues of concern raised by themselves, their teachers or parents
- Consults and provides guidance to parents, teachers, advisors and administrators when psychosocial concerns arise about a student
- Evaluates students for mental health issues and provides both crisis and short-term counseling
- Refers students for treatment, psychological testing and psychiatric evaluation to providers in the community.
- Interfaces with outside therapists regarding students under their care
- Consults directly with families and provides child guidance as well as short-term family therapy
- Trains faculty and consults with teachers, deans and advisors regarding ways of understanding and supporting students in emotional distress
- Develops programs and workshops for students and families on topics related to pre-adolescent and adolescent development, and social and emotional health
- Serves as a member of the Student Support Team, working closely with the Learning Specialists, Academic Dean and Head of the Middle School to support students experiencing academic and/or psychological issues, and in making policy.
- Oversees the Early Assistance Program (EAP)
- Works closely with the Dean of students, Dean of the Middle School, and Head of School to address major discipline issues and to create a strong and healthy school environment
- Consults with the Director of International Students Program on issues related to acculturation, belonging, and overall school adjustment.
- Serves on the Head of School’s Administrative Team
- Serves as a member of the Admissions Committee
