Brimmer and May School seeks a collaborative, dynamic and innovative librarian to serve as our Middle and Upper School (grades 6-12) Librarian and Director of Libraries PK-12. We seek a person that will utilize the library program to help support the school in its mission of developing “informed, engaged, and ethical citizens and leaders for the global community”. The librarian will fulfill a variety of roles to ensure that students and faculty are accessing and using information and technology effectively, and will also oversee the School’s PreK-12 Library programs. The position to reports to the Middle and Upper School Heads. Job Expectations and Requirements: Work with teachers, technology specialists, and administration to foster and expand connections between student research work, information resources, curriculum and learning outcomes. Create an environment where collaboration and creative problem solving thrive and open communication is invited. Instill enthusiasm in others to encourage their involvement in research in the school. Anticipate obstacles, be flexible to retool and meet challenges when problems arise, be an active leader in this area. -
Maintain and establish innovative practices in the library program in areas such as current trends, program design, student access, and collection development. -
Strong ability to communicate and work collaboratively with faculty, students, administrators, other library staff, and technology department. -
Keen problem solving skills, creative thinker, and a willingness to try new things. -
Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum planning and instruction as it pertains to information literacy and technology, and provide back up technical support to teachers when possible. -
Serve on decision making teams in the school and participate in accreditation processes -
Provide and plan professional development opportunities within the school for and with faculty and staff, and including other school librarians when possible. • Keep the HOS and other admin abreast of the library program’s progress and standing via reports and meetings. • Connect to the School, parents and broader world through a public relations presence on social media and via regular library newsletters and website maintenance. Instructional Partner and Teacher: Empower students to become critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers and skillful researchers and users of information, serve as internal research consultant for faculty. • Collaborate with teachers to design and teach engaging inquiry, learning experiences, and assessments that incorporate multiple literacies and foster critical thinking. • Teach reading for understanding, for exposure to diversity of viewpoints, and for pleasure. • Support the Reading Workshop program in the Middle School by playing an active role connecting students and teachers to literature. • Help students learn to make meaning, build on prior knowledge, and construct new knowledge. • Lead, model, and coach the use all digital technologies effectively. Information Specialist: Provide leadership and expertise in selection, acquisition, evaluation, and organization of information and technologies across formats, as well as in the ethical use of information. • Establish and maintain a positive library climate that allows various patrons to be able to use the space successfully and as intended, in a manner that matches the School’s approach to guiding student behavior and work. -
Develop and maintain a collection that meets curricular needs. Organize and curate the collection for maximum effectiveness. -
Network with other libraries, librarian groups and state resources to provide access to collections outside the school. -
Evaluate, promote and use existing and emerging technologies -
Teach fair use, be an expert on citation and a resource for understanding copyright. -
Provide 24/7 access to digital information resources for the entire learning community. -
Develop and maintain a scope and sequence for research skills in the school that cross references the highest state and national standards for school library programs. |
