Evansville Day School (EDS), in partnership with parents, offers a student-centered, college preparatory program supported by a challenging and comprehensive curriculum that encourages each student from Junior Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 to strive for excellence in mind, body, and human spirit. EDS was founded in 1946 and remains the only independent school in the greater Evansville region. The school enrolls approximately 300 students and boasts a 40 acre wooded campus, an impressively diverse student body, and 100% four-year college placement. Day School staff hold much more than a job: they enjoy the opportunity to be part of a dynamic learning community with myriad ways to engage students, families, and colleagues, as everyone participates in the life of the school. All Day School faculty and staff are asked to focus actions and decisions on what is best for the school and the students. RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director of College Counseling is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the college guidance program of the school, including all college testing and college counseling activities. The Director of College Counseling reports directly to the Head of the Middle and Upper School. Specific duties and responsibilities include: - To coordinate and oversee a college counseling program for students in grades 7-12 in accordance with the philosophy and mission of the school and manage all steps in the application process.
- To establish informational meetings for parents and students regarding college application, admission, and financial aid.
- To coordinate the transmission of a complete set of student credentials to each college: transcript, recommendations, secondary school report, EDS profile, and all other required documents and data.
- To confer with students and parents on the application process and college choices.
- To establish a process for one-on-one consultation with the families of juniors and seniors about the college admissions process.
- To promote the strengths of Evansville Day School and its graduates to the colleges and universities applied to by seniors.
- To organize and administer the school’s standardized testing programs including: the PSAT, on site ACT or SAT testing, AP exams, and testing required by the state of Indiana. The Director should also assist Upper School students in registering for the PSAT’s, ACT’s, SAT’s and AP exams. The Director will be responsible for applying for accommodations on exams for all qualified students.
- To write a comprehensive recommendation for each senior.
- To oversee each senior’s progress through the fall process of finalizing their list of colleges and sending off applications.
- To advise the faculty and staff in their writing of college recommendations.
- To help seniors and their families to understand and decide among their financial aid packages.
- To attend conferences and visit universities to build relationships, upon request of or upon approval by the Head of Middle and Upper School.
- To invite and receive college admission visitors to campus.
- To establish and maintain an annual budget.
- To deliver a College Counseling Report to the Board of Trustees in May.
- To collaborate closely with the athletics department regarding NCAA recruitment and requirements.
- To coordinate enrollment in all online classes and manage student participation therein.
- To build relationships with local businesses and parents to help with senior projects, internships, and guest lecturers, including monitoring and assessing senior projects and monitoring students’ participation in internship programs.
- To maintain accurate and complete records of students’ application materials, college applications, acceptances, matriculations, scholarships and aid awarded, individual educational plans, support and accommodation plans, etc. To analyze and create reports on said plans to help give well-informed advice to students, faculty, the Head of Middle and Upper School, and the school.
As Evansville Day School is a small school, the Director of College Counseling, depending on his/her individual strengths, may be asked to take on additional responsibilities, which may include but are not limited to: - Teaching one or more classes
- Coaching a sports or academic team
- Sponsoring a club
- Serving as an academic advisor
- Being involved as a mentor or committee advisor in the Student Leadership Program
- Engaging in student life
