Menlo School is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory school for students in grades six through twelve. Located in Atherton, California, and established in 1915, the School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and is a member of the National and California Associations of Independent Schools. We seek an enthusiastic individual to join the College Counseling team, made up of four counselors and an assistant. The new counselor will advise roughly 35 seniors, 35 juniors, and 35 sophomores. This is a full time, 12-month position that reports to the Director of College Counseling. The position will begin in June 2021, although we are very open to someone that is able to start sooner. Primary Responsibilities: - Develop and present educational programming to our 9th-12th grade students and families on the college search and admissions processes in conjunction with the college counseling team
- Maintain a personalized approach to counseling and working with students and families to reinforce the philosophy that "fit" in the college process is different for every student
- Maintain a professional level of sensitivity to different family cultures and dynamics
- Help students self-assess and research higher education and other post secondary opportunities
- Address the social and emotional pressures on students and families as associated with the college search, application, and admissions processes
- Write official school letters of recommendations for approximately 35 seniors
- Meet with college representatives who visit the Menlo campus and serve as a liaison with college admissions offices throughout the academic year
- Visit colleges and universities throughout the academic year and attend national and regional college admissions counseling conferences and forums
Required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience include but are not limited to: - Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s or postgraduate work in subject matter or counseling strongly preferred.
- 3-5 years of college admissions or college counseling in an independent school environment.
- Demonstrated leadership and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Experience with online college admissions software (SCOIR) is strongly preferred.
- Ability to work well with students and colleagues; willingness to be an active, enthusiastic member of the Menlo community. Demonstrated interest in working with adolescents and their parents.
- A clear understanding of the complex nature of the college counseling and college application process.
- Spanish speaking ability is strongly preferred.
- Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends as necessary.
