North Shore Country Day School, a progressive, academically rigorous, co-ed, JK-12 independent school near Chicago, seeks candidates for a Middle School Visual Arts Teacher opening beginning at the start of the 2021/2022 Academic Year. While a bachelor’s degree is required, a MAT, MFA, or MAAE is preferred. North Shore is eager to consider applications from groups traditionally underrepresented in independent school communities. We seek candidates with three or more years of relevant teaching experience, a demonstrable talent and passion for teaching visual art to middle school students (6th, 7th and 8th grade), and a commitment to making their classroom a joyful and expressive space for students. A strong understanding of current trends in aesthetic education, global art history, and diverse expressions of visual culture is desired. Additionally, candidates with a current, active practice as a visual artist are preferred. Ideal candidates will be believers and cultivators of the ‘growth mindset,’ excellent written and oral communicators, collaborative and valued colleagues, and life-long learners who are committed to ongoing professional development. We seek candidates who have a demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion, have invested in growing their intercultural competencies, and whose teaching practice – inside and outside the classroom - reflect those competencies. Candidates should nurture students’ abilities to express personal narrative in individualized ways, experiment with unfamiliar ideas and materials, and connect artmaking to their developing understanding of the world in which they live. The Middle School Arts curriculum centers on developing contemporary skills through the exploration of materials such as clay, paint, mixed-media and digital media. Candidates should be skilled integrators of educational technology into their teaching practice. North Shore offers competitive salaries that are commensurate with experience. Additionally, North Shore provides an excellent employee benefits program, including health and retirement benefits.
