The new Dean of Students at Hill-Murray is a high energy, student-centered individual who is innovative, decisive, proactive, and solution-oriented. In collaboration with other members of the senior leadership team, the Dean of Students is responsible for the overall safety and wellbeing of our student body and for promoting a healthy campus culture in which adolescents can grow and thrive. The position has the principal responsibility for providing strategic leadership, vision, oversight, and coordination for all dimensions of student discipline and services. Working with the counseling department, student life, advisors, and administrators, the Dean of Students plays an essential role in creating a support structure and a sense of belonging for every student. An important aspect of adolescent growth and development involves learning personal accountability and respect for Hill-Muray’s core values, and therefore the Dean of Students is also charged with maintaining and enforcing safe community boundaries, rules, and regulations. Responsibilities Student Well-being and Community Building: - Lead campus-wide efforts to live our mission fully and thereby create a strong community that ensures a sense of belonging, inclusion, and respect for all students and that results in lifelong identity and pride as Hill-Murray Pioneers.
- Maintain a strong curriculum of campus resources, programs, and student services that support student physical and mental health, success, retention, and graduation. Oversee the ongoing assessment of these programs and resources to ensure continuing high quality and relevance to the current needs of students.
- Working closely with Enrollment Management, Division Directors, and Athletic/Activities Director to oversee a positive and supportive onboarding and orientation process for new students. This includes anticipating right from the start the various needs of our socio-economically, racially, and culturally diverse student population.
- Partner with the counseling department to implement, coordinate and maintain athletic, academic, and all of our health-related programs that provide for physical, social, and emotional wellbeing.
- Advise and train student leaders, including Student Council leadership, and other student leaders in the building to set the tone for the School.
Advocacy & Crisis Management: - Actively engage, listen to, and advocate for student voices and concerns on emerging situations that affect students. Oversee the response to student emergencies, including situations involving a student in crisis.
- Serve as a point of contact and support for students impacted by issues such as harassment or misconduct. Calmly respond to situations with care and concern, and make wise decisions in ambiguous situations. In more critical situations, partner with other senior leaders, including the President, to find consistent and fair resolutions.
- Collaborate with colleagues, campus constituents, and community resources to provide support to affected individuals, groups, or families.
- With Division Directors, establish and administer disciplinary policies and procedures and interact with parents on disciplinary matters.
- Partner with the President on legal issues relating to student life. Lead efforts to comply with all applicable state and federal regulations.
Other Duties: - Collaborate with the Director of Admission and Chief Financial Officer regarding all enrollment matters, including leaves, withdrawals, and changes of student status.
- Serve as a substitute duty affiliate as needed, regularly visits common areas, classrooms, assign and support the Administrator on Duty, and help provide senior staff coverage as needed.
- Teach one course/term and coach (or lead another co-curricular activity) one season, as needed.
- Serve as a liaison and partner closely with the school nurse, counseling department, dining services, and facilities/safety to help maintain the health and safety of our students.
