Westtown School is seeking a full-time English Teacher for the 2021-22 school year. As Westtown strives to fulfill our commitment to be an anti-bias, anti-racist (ABAR) school, we are seeking culturally competent educators with a demonstrated commitment to and ongoing professional development in the areas of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice (DEISJ) which is evidenced in their personal and professional interactions, curriculum, and pedagogy. Building on this foundation, the Upper School English position will involve teaching four classes each semester and participating fully in the residential and co-curricular life of the school. Preference will be given to qualified applicants with additional experience teaching ESOL and/or differentiated learners and those with experience in distance and hybrid learning. Westtown School is an independent, co-educational, pre-K to 12, college preparatory day and boarding school located in suburban West Chester, PA, approximately 30 miles from Philadelphia. Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Develops culturally responsive lessons and hands-on learning activities that promote problem-solving, creative thinking, collaboration, and effective communication skills while encouraging risk-taking in learning;
- Actively involves students in the classroom through group work, project-based learning, exploration, questioning, discussion, and other cooperative teaching techniques;
- Integrates technology seamlessly into teaching strategies and practices;
- Enthusiastically seeks out and participates in both school-sponsored and self-selected professional development opportunities to grow as an instructional leader;
- Communicates effectively with all constituents – students, colleagues, administrators, and parents.
- Demonstrates the inclusion of a panoply of diverse, literary voices in instruction and who can detail the ways in which they incorporate the practice of writing into their classes in creative ways.
Qualifications
- BA or BS degree required; advanced degree preferred;
- 3-5 years of relevant classroom teaching experience at the high school level, preferably in an independent school;
- Enthusiasm for full participation in the coaching, advising and residential duties required of a full-time Upper School faculty member;
- Ability to effectively engage students via in-person, remote or hybrid learning;
- Experience and interest in teaching ESOL/ English Language Enrichment preferred;
- A demonstrated commitment to enhancing an inclusive school community based on cultural competence, commitment to social justice, and respect for all voices;
- A strong character with a team-oriented spirit, and the ability to connect meaningfully with students throughout our diverse community;
- Strong affinity for the mission of Westtown School and an educational philosophy consistent with the school’s Quaker values.
