Job Title: Athletic Trainer Department: Athletics Reports to: Athletic Director FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Last Updated: January 2021 Summary: Blue Ridge School is an all-boys, all-boarding college preparatory school for 180 boys on a stunning 750-acre campus along the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Blue Ridge is only 20 miles from Charlottesville, Virginia, a vibrant community and home to the University of Virginia. Blue Ridge educators gain the added satisfaction of working with students inside and outside the classroom which gives them a greater influence in shaping a student’s mind and character. Our teachers have the opportunity to lead athletic and outdoor activities based on their own passions. The school provides an interactive learning environment in which teachers have a great amount of autonomy in their classrooms and still have the support of a collaborative faculty. Using a college-preparatory curriculum with a high-degree of individual support, teachers can better prepare their students for college and careers in the 21st century. Most teachers live on campus in homes provided by the school. On campus housing helps give our safe, family-oriented community the sense of a small village in which students and families live and work together. This 9.5-month part-time position, mid-August – May, requires an individual that is certified and meets the requirements as set forth by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification and the Virginia Board of Athletic Trainer Examiners. The Athletic Trainer (AT) is solely responsible for identifying and treating injuries among students and providing support throughout the recovery process. The employee will evaluate the physical conditions of students and refer students to appropriate resources as needed. Decisions made by the AT require discretionary judgment and analysis, yet must be discussed and approved by the Director of Health & Wellness. The AT will work in accordance with a weekly schedule to be determined by the Athletic Director. Weekly schedules will vary according to the athletic season. Typically, the AT will work 3 hours on non-competition days, including time before and after practices. On home competition days the AT will be on-campus an hour prior, during and time after competitions, as needed for care. The AT will be required to travel with the Football and Lacrosse teams for competitions across the state. Some weekends and school breaks will also be required for competitions and practices. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: - Provide first aid and injury assessment/treatment/rehabilitation/reconditioning for all student-athletes during daily practices, at-home competitions and away games as assigned.
- Makes appropriate referrals and appointments with the appropriate physicians for students.
- Provide coverage at home events and practices from the beginning of the fall sport season to the conclusion of the spring season.
- Ensure that all students have required physicals prior to participating in athletics.
- Conduct baseline concussion testing and supervise the clearance of injured athletes prior to and during the sport seasons.
- Maintain an effective and efficient athletic training room.
- Communicates and coordinates medical issues/status of boys with parents in a time efficient manner.
- File/record all necessary reports associated with athletic injuries and/or incidents.
- Oversee the ordering of supplies and equipment pertaining to the athletic training room and maintain an up to date inventory. Provide the Athletic Director with an annual budget for supplies and equipment.
- Create a safe playing environment by monitoring and controlling environmental risks.
- Share professional literature relative to athletic training with the school’s coaching staff.
- Assist nursing staff, as needed, to include undergoing Medication Administration Training (MAT).
- Demonstrate continued professional curiosity and growth.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions: The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 60% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under substantial temperature variations and under conditions with relatively high exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. |
