Friends Select is seeking a passionate, knowledgeable, and creative lower school science educator to inspire our young scientists and facilitate learning that will allow them to discover concepts, build content knowledge, and foster their natural curiosity! A school located in the center of Philadelphia and surrounded by museums of science, teaching hospitals, and a rich urban habitat, Friends Select School seeks a teacher with a strong science background who has experience successfully teaching the life sciences, physical sciences, earth sciences, and STEM to elementary students and who will use the city to enhance learning. This full-time position includes teaching science to PreK-4th grade students by implementing a science curriculum that is teacher-created, developmentally appropriate, hands-on, interactive, connected to the real world, interdisciplinary, and responsive to the strengths and interests of the students. The ideal candidate has the following: - A constructivist approach to teaching
- Formal training in science (B.A./B.S. minimum; M.A./M.S. preferred)
- Knowledge of child development and experience teaching students from ages 4-10 years old.
- Knowledge of science pedagogy and curriculum
- Experience in curriculum development
- Strong classroom management skills and an ability to differentiate instruction
- Strong interpersonal skills needed to work collaboratively with other faculty and administrators
- Flexibility, strong organization, and a sense of humor
- A commitment to social justice and anti-racist education
The responsibilities of the lower school science teacher include - teaching pre-kindergarten through 4th-grade science classes
- collaborating with lower school faculty to integrate science into their curriculum
- collaborating with colleagues in the science department to continually refine our cross-departmental science program at FSS
- communicating with parents including, but not limited to, progress reports and parent conferences
- meeting after school as needed for faculty meetings, curriculum development, and committee work (approximately 2 times per week)
- attending various school events
- carrying out various duties such as supervising lunch, recess, and dismissal
