The Roxbury Support Program at Cheshire Academy is a contractual, collaborative effort between the student and the Roxbury Program. The Roxbury staff works in conjunction with the classroom teachers, parents, dorm parents and the health center in support of those students with diagnosed language learning disabilities, with executive function disorders, or with the need for study skills strategies. The purpose of the program is to optimize the success of students with specific learning style needs by helping the student and those in the academic environment to identify and to understand learning strengths and weaknesses and to then utilize the strategies and accommodations necessary to ensure academic success. The ultimate goal of the program is to provide support and guidance to students in managing their academic needs until they become independent, self-advocates in the classroom, striving toward the transition in college. REPORTS TO: Assistant Head of School for Academic Affairs SCHEDULE: 12-month administrative position Reporting to the Assistant Head of School for Academics, the Director of Roxbury Support Program and Academic Services works in concert with department chairs and faculty in order to coalesce the missions of Roxbury with the mission of Cheshire Academy. Additionally, Director works will work closely with Admission reviewing files to identify individual learning needs, make recommendation for accommodation plans, liaise with local public schools with regarding to PPT and testing appointments. Duties and Responsibilities: Roxbury Academic Program - Observation, supervision, documentation and ongoing professional development of the Roxbury staff.
- Closely align with Admissions and meet with all prospective students and parents to assure proper placement and set achievable goals.
- Represent school at various functions.
- Communicate with parents, guardians on a weekly basis. Provide follow-up documents on student progress daily and maintain ongoing communication with classroom instructor, the students, parents and when needed the Health Center or other health professionals.
- Dedicate time to support each student in all aspects of their lives and advocate for the student when necessary.
- Attend weekly health team meetings when necessary and collaborate with health center to support Roxbury students.
- Work with college counseling to assist with appropriate placement of Roxbury students.
- Follow up with concerns of faculty members, parents, and students regarding any aspect of the program.
- Assist with new teacher orientation and continuing education and mentoring.
- Keep abreast of current research and information in the field of learning differences and metacognition.
- Attend professional development events.
- Works independently with Roxbury students on a daily basis. Helps students understand their learning differences, teaching strategies and time management skills that will help them best meet and overcome challenges.
Educational Services Admissions - Review files of candidates with identified learning needs, prepare summary of needs and what CA can and cannot provide with recommendations regarding acceptance and Roxbury.
- Meet with candidates and parents as requested by Director of Admissions
- Participate in Admission meet and greets, visitations, etc. as requested by Director of Admissions
- Complete a formal screening and submit a report for potential candidates as requested
Accommodation Plans - Develop accommodation plans for all eligible students
- Maintain list of students eligible for accommodations and eligible for extra time on tests. Disseminate to teachers prior to the start of school and prior to final exams. As students are added during the year, notify relevant teachers promptly.
- Coordinate record keeping of all internal and external testing with the Academic Office.
College Counseling - Serve as Students with Disabilities/SEN representative to College Board, ACT and IB
- Proactively apply for extra time on PSAT/SAT for all eligible students prior to 10th grade (with parent permission). Notify same parents about the very different ACT process.
- Coordinate and/or proctor special testing situations (beyond time and a half) for SAT/ACT.
- Provide and help submit all learning/testing accommodations for IB students with IB coordinators.
Academic Office - Resource for Academic Office regarding students of concern. Screen students as requested.
- Provide teacher training as requested, including classroom management, implementing accommodations, etc.
- Participate in parent meetings as requested.
- Liaison to area Public Schools, refer students for re-evaluation with parent permission, coordinate testing appointments and participate in all PPTs.
Other responsibilities MAY include: - Advising;
- Coaching and/or leading extra-curricular activities;
- Weekend team responsibilities;
- Residential/dormitory duties (if you are a residential faculty/staff member);
- Must have a valid driver’s license with the ability to obtain an CT “A” endorsement for purposes of transporting students.
