Title:  Grounds Foreman

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

The Grounds Foreman will report directly to the Facilities Director.  Successful candidates will have a mechanical background and will perform physical labor to clean, repair, improve, treat and maintain South Kent School’s turf, shrubs, trees, flower beds, grounds, athletic fields, vehicles and equipment. The individual in this position will also provide physical support for the set up and dismantling of material and equipment for various scheduled events and physical moves throughout the year.  This position requires collaborative work with the Facilities Team as well as a customer service oriented attitude in working with students, faculty and staff.

GROUNDS FOREMAN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage all Grounds full time and part time personnel.
  • Perform a wide range of daily maintenance and operation tasks on the grounds and athletic fields of a 49-acre campus.
  • Supervises and participates in snow removal activities; drives and operates vehicles and equipment with snow plows, blowers, sand/salt spreaders.  Must know how to use a shovel.
  • Pruning, mowing, mulching, leaf removal, gardening, planting and fertilizing.
  • Sports fields set-up and maintenance.
  • Measure, stake and establish lay-out lines on athletic fields when needed.
  • Operates, inspects and conducts regular maintenance and minor repairs to vehicles, buses and grounds equipment.
  • Perform thorough, daily maintenance on machinery and vehicles.
  • Must be available for off-hour emergencies and snow removal.
  • Must be available to shift your schedule and work weekends when needed.
  • Help other maintenance personnel with their work when needed.

Job Type: 12 Month/40 hours a week/Full Time – 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, M-F – Will need to have some flexibility.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & ABILITIES

  • Excellent knowledge of machinery and hydraulic, electrical and other systems and their components.
  • Aptitude in using various hand tools (screwdrivers, hammers, drills etc.).
  • Must be able to work well in a team environment and prioritize multiple projects and tasks.
  • Must be highly motivated to learn new skills that are essential for a successful school grounds operation.
  • Must have the ability to solve problems as they arise and be able to perform tasks without supervision.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and/or written instructions efficiently and effectively. This will include the ability to complete daily reports.
  • Be able to follow safety guidelines and exercise good judgment in all aspects of responsibility.
  • Willingness to keep up on professional development.
  • Ability to be flexible and work collaboratively.  
  • Must be able to supervise, lead and motivate the grounds staff under your charge.
  • Must have full knowledge of proper pruning and identification of all trees and shrubs.
  • Must have full knowledge of proper turf identification, maintenance and fertilization.
  • Must have knowledge of proper maintenance of field irrigation systems.
  • Must be able to properly maintain and oversee the maintenance of gardens and landscaping features.
  • Must be physically strong enough to lift and move heavy objects.
  • Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, carry, push, pull and lift over 50lbs.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Completion of High School or GED.
  • Pass a background check.
