Crofton House School requires a String Orchestra (Grades 8 - 12) and Choir (Grade 8-12) teacher to teach, conduct, and assess a talented group of musicians. The music program at Crofton House School is remarkable and, for teachers who are passionate about music and about sharing that passion with students who are creative, committed and willing, the rewards of teaching at Crofton House School are extraordinary. Teach and learn beside other performance-based teachers who inspire students to develop and pursue their interest in all areas of music, including general music, band, choir and orchestra. The facilities for music study and performance are well equipped. Applicants with orchestra and/or choir experience are encouraged to apply. FTE dependent on skills and experience. Responsibilities: Orchestra: - Teaching morning classes (7:15 - 8:15 am) on Tuesdays and Thursdays, adhering to the BC curriculum for grade-level music
- Preparing the orchestra for an evening spring concert, or alternative virtual performances depending on Covid restrictions
- Preparing the orchestra for other performances (or virtual performances) within the ceremonial life of the school.
Choir: - Teaching morning classes (7:40 - 8:15 am during Covid restrictions; 7:15 - 8:15am when restrictions are lifted) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, adhering to the BC curriculum for grade-level music
- Teaching one multi-grade level choral music block every other day
- Preparing the Choir for an evening spring concert, or alternative virtual performances depending on Covid restrictions
- Preparing the Choir for other performances (or virtual performances) within the ceremonial life of the school.
School-wide: - Supporting, as much as possible, the other music teachers in preparing for and producing all student concerts and virtual concerts
- Contributing to co-curricular activities
- Contributing to student final report cards, grades and comments
- Be responsible for the creation of a safe, caring and orderly learning environment
- Learn and teach collaboratively with teachers in the department to plan, develop, implement an extraordinary learning experience for each individual student
Qualifications, Knowledge, Experience: - Relevant university qualifications preferably at the graduate level (e.g. Bachelor of Education plus Bachelor of Music or equivalent)
- B.C. Ministry of Education Certificate or Independent School Certification qualification criteria
- Experience in an independent school, an asset
- Experience teaching senior-level strings in a school setting; experience teaching senior-level choir in a school setting
- Excellent rehearsal skills (conducting skills, pacing, problem-solving, diagnosing and assessing within a rehearsal setting)
- Proficient on a string instrument; understanding of string instrument pedagogy
- Proficient vocal technique; understanding of choral pedagogy including safe use of the voice and an understanding of vocal change and development process in adolescence
- Proficient piano skills
- A demonstrable awareness of the learning styles of girls and young women
- Collaborative and energetic with a passion for teaching
- Committed to the craft of teaching, best practices, and standards of professional practice
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills
