La Jolla Country Day's Middle School cultivates the maturation of our young scholars in Grades 5–8 in an ever-changing time in their lives. A bridge between the Lower and Upper Schools, the Middle School challenges students within a nurturing environment and provides opportunities to explore a variety of academic offerings, technology, physical education, music, art, community service, and leadership roles. We believe in the education of the whole child—inside and outside of the classroom—and encourage students to develop intellectually as well as into citizens of good character. We are seeking a passionate, collaborative, experienced math educator for the 2021-2022 academic year to join our Middle School team. They are an enthusiastic individual who has demonstrated a passion for learning and for teaching that builds interest in, excitement for, and mastery of the designed curriculum. In addition, the candidate will be expected to collaborate effectively with colleagues, serve as a student advisor, and contribute to the life of the school in co-curricular areas. This educator will teach four sections of integrated math and serve as an advisor to a group of 8th grade students, teaching Facing History and Ourselves. Essential duties include: (1) planning and preparation of materials, classroom instruction and ongoing student assessment; (2) communication with parents, including formal written reports on student progress throughout the year; (3) active, collaborative participation in the work of the department on curriculum development, pedagogy, student assessment, and best practices. Additional Expectations - Provides instruction in varying group sizes and individually in the specified subject matter;
- Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom;
- Develops lesson plans and instructional materials as part of planned learning experiences to motivate pupils;
- Evaluates pupil academic and social growth, keeps accurate records, prepares progress reports and communicates with parents on individual pupil progress;
- Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service education activities provided by the school and/or self-selected professional growth activities;
- Creates activities and opportunities that encourage curiosity, exploration, problem-solving, and the use of technology;
- Completes all reports as required, including student evaluation, orders, program evaluation and lesson plans;
- Interprets the educational program to parents and other community members through personal conferences, meetings and various media;
- Attends faculty meetings, in-service meetings, team meetings, grade level meetings or department meetings;
- Administers and scores such tests as may be required by the school;
- Performs basic attendance accounting;
- Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day as scheduled;
- May participate in the Experiential Education Program with students;
- Performs other duties of an adjunct nature, which are necessary to smooth operation of the school as needed.
