Position Summary: The Language Department has an opening for a highly-qualified, collaborative and dynamic teacher who has significant knowledge of Chinese language and culture as well as foreign language teaching pedagogy. Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree is required. Native or near-native fluency in Standard Mandarin and fluency in English are expected. Special training in Chinese language teaching, applied linguistics, foreign language pedagogy, or related fields is preferred. Successful applicants will also show demonstrated commitment to and proven experience in dynamic and effective Chinese teaching to non-Chinese learners, including familiarity with the use of Chinese teaching technologies. At least three years of teaching experience is required. In addition to the primary classroom responsibilities, the successful applicant should expect to collaborate regularly with other Chinese teachers to sustain and further develop our program in Chinese language and culture. They are also expected to participate actively in the professional and intellectual life of the Classical and Modern Language Department. Duties & Responsibilities: Teaching responsibilities will include teaching four sections of Chinese. Hotchkiss faculty actively participate in all aspects of community life through service in Hotchkiss’ residential, advising, and co-curricular programs. Typical responsibilities of a full-time faculty member at Hotchkiss include teaching four classes, coaching two seasons (or the equivalent) of a co-curricular team or the equivalent, regular duty in our residential program, and periodic participation in faculty committees and/or as an advisor to student clubs. Full-time faculty members are generally expected to obtain a public service endorsement on their CT drivers license within the first year of employment, so that they may drive students in school vehicles. Compensation: Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and education level.
