UPPER ELEMENTARY/MIDDLE SCHOOL LIBRARIAN 100% FTE Start Date: August, 2021 Reports to: Upper and Lower School Division Heads Marin Country Day School seeks a teacher librarian who is passionate about teaching students the skills they need to thrive in today’s world. A proven ability to teach media literacy, research, and citation is a must. The job will require a broad knowledge of middle grade and young adult literature, with a focus on diversity and the aptitude to connect students with books. The librarian should embody the ideal of the life-long learner and have a background or interest in cultural competency, curriculum development, technology integration and environmental sustainability and a belief in teaching with the interests of the whole child in mind. Responsibilities - Teaches library classes to students in grades 4-8, covering such skills as orientation to the collection and online catalog; digital citizenship more broadly as well as online research skills, including web search and evaluation, use of research databases, and MLA citation format
- Creates a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that honors and nurtures each child’s individual identity
- Leads student book clubs
- Acts as a resource for students, teachers, and guardians in grades 4-8 including book recommendations, research assistance, and curricular connections
- Collaborates with Student Support Services to meet the needs of individual learners in 4-8
- Provides library supervision daily before and after school and at recess.
- Collaborates with K-3 librarian to:
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the library including circulation, collection development, cataloging, budgeting, and making the physical space appealing and accessible
- Arrange for author and illustrator assemblies
- Collaborate with the Book Fair Chair and committees on the annual book fair
- Coordinate parent/guardian and upper school student volunteers
- Ensure that the library collection and displays provide windows and mirrors for all members of our community
- Update the library website with book reviews and resources and send out regular newsletters
- Attends team, Division and Full Faculty/Staff meetings
- Participates on committees as needed
