Founded in 1883, Allen-Stevenson is a K-8 independent school for boys with an enrollment of 392 students. Located in the heart of New York City’s Upper East Side, the School is a joyful, inclusive community. Our urban setting affords many educational and cultural advantages. The School seeks a science teacher to teach science to middle school grade levels and to work collaboratively with a team of science teachers across the disciplines beginning in September 2021. This is a full-time position and is eligible for a complete benefits package. The department is currently incorporating the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) into our science curriculum. Using a social/environmental justice lens, phenomena-based learning, and an interdisciplinary approach, the science curriculum provides the students with the necessary tools to become informed and active global citizens. We strive for the boys to understand that solutions to our most pressing problems in the world demand broad perspectives and expertise from many disciplines and backgrounds. Allen-Stevenson is fortunate to have moved into four brand new science and engineering labs and to be able to incorporate up-to-date technology into our program, including a 1:1 laptop program for Grades 4 through 8, digital microscopes in science labs, and other such resources where appropriate. The School Allen-Stevenson is at a very exciting period in its growth. Among other initiatives, the School is nearing the end of a transformative building expansion project, which will be completed in Fall 2021. In addition to the aforementioned science and engineering labs, there will be a new teaching greenhouse. Primary responsibilities include: - Teach a range of science classes
- Demonstrate familiarity with NGSS and how the standards align with your teaching approach
- Develop engineering (using EDP) projects in collaboration with the science team and other disciplines
- Demonstrate a commitment to working with students as they make real-world connections through their science study
- Be willing to be a part of a collaborative team as the science program continues to develop
- Use an inquiry-based approach (EDP) to problem solving
The ideal candidate will: - Have at least 1-3 years of elementary and/or middle school science teaching experience
- Have an advanced degree in science or related field
