Lakeside School, an independent coeducational day school located in north Seattle, Washington, is currently recruiting for a physical education department head beginning August 2021, to be responsible for ensuring successful development and delivery of a PE curricula to students in grades 5-12. Our goal is to provide a dynamic, culturally responsive, and inclusive program which inspires all students to engage in and explore a variety of activities within a safe, supportive environment with the ultimate aim of establishing the habits necessary for a healthy lifestyle. Currently, Upper School students are required to take one semester of PE in grade 9 and two electives before the end of their junior year. Students in the Middle School take two 50-minute classes per three day rotation for the entire year.
Responsibilities The ideal candidate will join a diverse team of colleagues who are energetic, creative, collaborative, and constantly exploring new ways to effectively serve our students and their families. The Physical Education teacher and 5-12 Department Head of Physical Education will lead the PE program in upper school. - Lead the department and manage all department head duties (hiring, supervision, evaluation, curriculum design, best pedagogical practices, budget management, participation in divisional and all-school department heads meetings).
- Research and represent emerging best practices and coordinate efforts to maintain an innovative, sustainable, comprehensive, and engaging program.
- Attend department head meetings in the Middle School and Upper School.
- Teach two sections of PE in the Middle School and two sections of PE in the Upper School.
- Advise a group of students in the Upper School or Middle School.
- Facilitate the delivery of a research-based, mission-aligned, culturally responsive PE curriculum to a diverse set of learners, including a focus on healthy and active lifestyle choices and habits.
- Be an engaged participant in the school’s diversity, equity, and inclusion work with specific attention to issues of power and privilege evident in physical education and athletics in general.
- Involvement in the life of the school through advising and engaging with student activities on both campuses.
Requirements and Qualifications - Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions. The candidate will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with cultures other than their own; and cultivate meaningful relationships with people that have different cultural frameworks.
- Minimum of a BA or BS in Physical Science, Exercise Science, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in working with students in a middle school, secondary school, college setting, or experience working with youth and/or young adults in an organization designed to build confidence and awareness through physical movement.
- Demonstrated leadership experience.
- Facility with national PE standards and best practices; knowledge of a variety of instructional methods and assessments, and an ability to create a learning environment that addresses and supports each student’s needs.
- Desire to become an engaged member of a school community with a commitment to the core values of our Mission Statement: academic excellence, diversity, global citizenship, and ethical behavior.
- Successful completion of a nationwide criminal history background check and a Washington State Patrol background check.
