MARK DAY SCHOOL Independent, All-Gender, K-8 School Counselor & SEL Coordinator Starting August 2021 Mark Day School seeks a collaborative and enthusiastic school counselor and SEL coordinator to work in fifth through eighth grades. The successful applicant for this position will help advance the school’s mission with positive energy, creativity, dedication to a diverse community, love for children, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to collaborate in partnership with the wider school community. This is a 4-day/week position serving as part of the counseling and SEL leadership team. Education and Experience - Master’s in Counseling, and appropriate licensure (LMFT, LCSW, or LPCC)
- A strong knowledge base in the area of mental health and social-emotional development, especially anxiety, depression, crisis management, social skill development, conflict resolution, behavioral management, ADHD, and parenting skills
- Relevant experience working with children in a school setting and an understanding of independent school culture
- A passion for working with children and their families, and an open and collaborative approach to working with students, teachers, parents, administrators, and outside care providers
- Proven track record of working effectively to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in a community committed to diversity, equity, and social justice
- Experience with Social-Emotional Learning, especially with curriculum development, lesson design, and classroom teaching. Experience with Responsive Classroom, Toolbox, Open Session, Solution Teams, or similar research-based programs a plus
Responsibilities and Opportunities - Partner collaboratively with Mark Day's counseling and student support team
- Serve as a primary point of contact for parents, guardians, faculty, and administrators about the social and emotional well-being and mental health of students
- Provide direct counseling services for students and families, including crisis counseling and parenting skills training, and provide referral guidance about psychotherapy outside of school
- Lead small group and conflict resolution check-ins with students and provide support as needed per class
- Assess risk to children and families
- Coordinate 5th-6th grade Social and Emotional Learning Program, including providing faculty with resources and guidance, organizing professional development, and maintaining scope & sequence of skills
- Teach Health & Wellness, SEL & Sexuality Education in collaboration with classroom teachers
- Support faculty with best practices in regard to children’s needs
- Attend Parent-Teacher Conferences and other parent meetings to discuss progress with parents as needed and assume an active role in relevant Student Support Plan (SSP) meetings
- Meet with teachers to discuss student learning profiles and ensure appropriate accommodations are in place
- Assist with the writing of individual student support plans (SSPs) that will target students’ strengths and needs
- Remain current on developments in the field (i.e. law & ethics, mandated reporting, and risk assessment) as well as laws governing confidentiality as they pertain to children and mental health services in independent schools
- Review and maintain information from neuropsychological reports, therapy, or medication in close partnership with Division Heads, Head of School, and Director of Student Life
- Maintain and update confidential records & documents
