Details Posted: February 12, 2021 Location: Santa Monica, California Show Map Type: Full Time - Faculty Category: Elementary Teacher PS1 MISSION STATEMENT PS1 is a diverse community committed to an ever-evolving model of pluralistic elementary education. On a path to self-knowledge, students engage and become the best versions of themselves. They develop critical academic and interpersonal skills to be confident and passionate contributors to an increasingly connected world. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES Plan and teach curriculum to children in a non-graded class (about a two-year age range) with a team teacher. Work closely with other faculty and staff. Provide a skill concentration (art, language arts, math, music, science, social studies, etc.) that would be an addition to the faculty's talent pool and enrich the school. Share supervision of activities outside the classroom and work to generate new projects and direction for the multicultural school community. Provide continuous student assessment, write mid-year and year-end progress reports, and hold teacher-student-parent conferences. Attend weekly faculty meetings and participate actively in curricular discussions in an ongoing exchange of information and support with a closely-knit staff. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES NEEDED Teaching in a non-graded setting requires much knowledge of child development. One must be able to adjust curriculum to the cognitive level of each child and provide a wide range of materials for the varying levels of student ability. To conference successfully with parents in such a school, one must have good communication skills, and a thorough understanding of the curriculum and each student's circumstances. A familiarity with many ways of approaching a subject, and a willingness to develop one's own materials and to learn new ways, are very important. Other qualities needed are a good sense of humor and organization, flexibility, self-motivation, and confidence. A PS1 teacher needs to be a team player who exhibits a sense of stewardship in the work setting. A minimum of two years prior experience, excluding student teaching, in teaching elementary school is essential. A California or other state teaching credential is preferred but is not required. Experience in non-graded schooling will be given preference. Excellent stamina, creativity, honesty, a generous heart, and a willingness to seek continuing education in the field are valued qualities. NOTES: Additional Salary Information: This position is competitively compensated with benefits. Salary is dependent upon personal qualifications and experience.
