Responsibilities
Lakeside Middle School’s science teachers are a collaborative team. Across the four grades the curriculum includes physics, chemistry, life science, global topics, climate change and engineering. The latter two occur at every grade level. Lakeside is re-envisioning our 5-12 curriculum and assessment so more interdisciplinary, self-directed and competency-based projects are likely in the future. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic scientist who is interested in curriculum development, innovative pedagogy, anti-racist education, collaborative teaching and working with highly motivated young students. Specific responsibilities for this position are to:
 

1. Teach four sections of science, most likely at two different grade levels. Class size is 16-18 students per class. Each class meets the equivalent of fifty minutes 2 out of every 3 days.
2. Work with a diverse student body who come to school with different and evolving lived experiences and levels of preparation. This work includes providing academic support for students with a variety of learning styles and strengths outside of class time as needed (e.g., answer homework questions via email, provide extra help during lunch or study halls) as well as employing anti-racist pedagogical strategies as needed to achieve equitable support and outcomes for all students
3. Provide academic support for students outside of class time as needed (e.g., answer homework questions via email, provide extra help during lunch or study halls).
4. Advise a group of 8-9 students in the middle school.
5. Collaborate actively with colleagues on innovative, equitable and inclusive curricula, pedagogy, and assessment strategies. Department emphasis is placed on teaching science through an equity and justice lens as well as encouraging students to develop good scientific habits of mind and critical thinking skills.
6.  Attend science department meetings and faculty meetings.
7. Participate in the life of the school community, including experiential parts of our program such as outdoor trips and service learning days.

The department head role includes:

1. Leading the department and managing all department head duties (hiring, supervision, evaluation, curriculum and pedagogy improvement, and budget management) and attending weekly department head meetings with the division director.
2. Leading the department in developing an inclusive and equitable curriculum in the sciences.
3. Help maintain an innovative, sustainable, comprehensive, and engaging program based on emerging best practices.
4. Attend department head meetings in the Middle School and Upper School. 

*Although the position is advertised as a dual position for Teaching and Department Head, we are open to considering qualified candidates who are interested in a teaching position only. 

Requirements and Qualifications
The successful candidate will:
 

1. Possess a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in science or a related field.
2. Have a demonstrated interest in educating adolescents, in or out of the classroom, ideally with experience teaching middle school, high school or college students.
3. Be flexible and have a sense of humor (seriously, it’s middle school)!
4. Be able to work with a diverse group of students whose backgrounds and experiences with science vary widely.
5. Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions.  The candidate will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with cultures other than their own; and cultivate meaningful relationships with people that have different cultural frameworks.
6. Have experience instructing a diverse student population (race, gender, religion, politics, etc.), including teaching students with different styles and approaches to learning.
7. Be comfortable using a PC/Windows platform computer.
8. Provide references who will speak to their excellent collaborative skills and an ability to be both a leader and a follower.
9. Candidates must satisfactorily complete two criminal background checks.
