Responsibilities
Lakeside Middle School’s science teachers are a collaborative team. Across the four grades the curriculum includes physics, chemistry, life science, global topics, climate change and engineering. The latter two occur at every grade level. Lakeside is re-envisioning our 5-12 curriculum and assessment so more interdisciplinary, self-directed and competency-based projects are likely in the future. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic scientist who is interested in curriculum development, innovative pedagogy, anti-racist education, collaborative teaching and working with highly motivated young students. Specific responsibilities for this position are to:
 

1. Teach two sections of science at the same grade level, probably 5th or 6th grade. Class size is 16-18 students per class. Each class meets for fifty minutes 2 out of every 3 days.
2. Working with a diverse student body who come to school with different and evolving lived experiences and levels of preparation. This work includes providing academic support for students with a variety of learning styles and strengths outside of class time (answering questions via email, in study halls, and one-on-one work, etc.) as well as employing anti-racist pedagogical strategies as needed to achieve equitable support and outcomes for all students.
3. Collaborate actively with colleagues on innovative and inclusive curriculum development and equitable pedagogy and assessment practices. Department emphasis is placed on encouraging students to develop good scientific habits of mind and critical thinking skills.
4. Attend science department meetings (one per week), faculty meetings (every Tuesday afternoon), and be an advisor to a small group of students (daily).
5. Participate in the life of the school community, including experiential parts of our program such as outdoor trips and service learning days.

Requirements and Qualifications
The successful candidate will:
 

1. Have experience teaching middle school, high school or college students.
2. Have a demonstrated interest in educating adolescents, in or out of the classroom.
3. Be flexible and have a sense of humor (seriously, it’s middle school)!
4. Be able to work with students who vary in their ability and learning styles.
5. Have experience instructing a diverse student population (race, gender, religion, politics, etc.)
6. Have cultural awareness -- this includes knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions, the ability to understand different perspectives, experience interacting respectfully with cultures other than their own and the ability to cultivate meaningful relationships with people that have different cultural frameworks.
7. Be comfortable using a PC/Windows platform computer.
8. Possess a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in science or a related field.
9. Provide references who will speak to their excellent collaborative skills and an ability to be both a leader and a follower.
10. Candidates must satisfactorily complete two criminal background checks.
