THE POSITION The Hawken Humanities department is looking for an enthusiastic educator and teacher leader to join the academic team. The Hawken Humanities curriculum explores a wide array of subjects, including (but not limited to) world cultures and civilizations, influential literature, U.S. history, and conflicts facing modern society. The department emphasizes the importance of diverse perspectives, encourages inquiry, and prioritizes the development of high quality argumentation and writing skills. The ideal candidate will be an experienced teacher leader in the Humanities and adept at facilitating project and discussion based learning in the Humanities classroom. This teacher leader will be passionate about leading a department of teachers in developing a scope and sequence of key content knowledge and skills that will ensure students are provided the most engaging learning opportunities in the Humanities. This teacher will also be excited to lead the team’s effort to co-design interdisciplinary learning opportunities with students and colleagues. We are looking for a team member who has experience in designing curriculum that is centered around the student experience and that elevates student voice both in the design process and in the classroom. Hawken School is committed to teaching the total child. Candidates should be eager to work in a collaborative team-based environment with thoughtful individuals committed to doing school differently. The essential duties/responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: - Lead the Humanities team as the team reimagines the scope and sequence of learning experiences
- Teach multiple sections of a Humanities course according to school needs.
- Advise a group of 12 students.
- Active use of feedback-based assessment.
- Perform other non-teaching duties as assigned by the Upper School Director or Head of School

QUALIFICATIONS - An undergraduate degree in a humanities related field with experience teaching courses. Advanced degrees and at least six years teaching experience preferred.
- Joyful enthusiasm, flexibility, good humor, and a team spirit necessary for curricular collaboration and innovation.
- Familiarity with diverse ways of engaging students over a range of learning styles enhanced by a desire to try new approaches.
- A passion for creative design of unique programming within our department and across disciplines leading to curriculum invoking interdisciplinary approaches, multicultural perspectives, and experiential opportunities in and out of the classroom.
- A continuous commitment to improve teaching proficiency, particularly with technology as applied to best practices in education.
- A deep understanding of adolescence and a passion for working with teenagers as they engage the complex issues of today’s world.
