Cannon School is a Jr K through Grade 12 independent school located in the greater Charlotte area. With roughly 420 students in the Upper School, Cannon holds as its mission both the nurturing of relationships and the engagement of every learner. In the twenty years that we have been at our present location, the physical campus has grown to include Upper School and Middle School additions, technology and language labs, our state-of-the-art makerspace, a performing arts center, and a strength and conditioning facility. Cannon recently adopted a new strategic design with five drivers centered around community and belongingness; students; educators; wellness; and sustainability. Our organizational affiliations reflect our philosophical commitment to autonomy, inquiry and mastery in the learning process. We have a strong and relational advisory system, and we believe that taking care of others is as important as learning about self. About our team. We are a five-person team, including four college counselors and a coordinator. We are looking for a teammate who will bring a kind demeanor, humility, industry competence and/or experience, strong work ethic, and a wide perspective to our group. While we each carry our own responsibilities, our work is collective. In service to our students and families, we partner with multiple departments across campus including admissions, athletics, advancement, academic and grade-level deans, student support, and faculty. We’re fortunate to have very low grade-level ratios (roughly 28 seniors per college counselor). We start meeting with and getting to know our students in freshman year, and we have a supportive and forward-thinking Head of School and Board. We are committed to doing our work well but also efficiently; thus we’re revisiting our framework for student meetings, programming, letter writing, list building, and rep visits. Our professional development budget is healthy, and we each set annual goals for growth in service to self, team, and Cannon. About the position. Compelling candidates will view themselves as an educator with strong working knowledge of the college admissions process. We want to find someone who has engaged frequently with students as part of this work, either through direct experience in college admissions or through prior college counseling work. The position demands strong written, in-person, and presentation-style communication skills; a nuanced approach to counseling teenagers; high energy; the ability to juggle multiple responsibilities at once; a professional and caring demeanor; and crucially, a sense of humor. We will especially value those who can be a strategic thinking partner in leveraging data and trends to develop short and long-term departmental objectives. This is a full-time, 11-month position reporting to the Director of College Counseling. The incoming person will serve on the Upper School Administrative Team, with the opportunity to contribute to big-picture thinking on curriculum, student wellness and engagement, and our larger community commitment to belongingness. |
